Laptop computer as a modern cause of erythema ab igne

Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a reticulated, telangiectatic, and hyperpigmented skin eruption resulting from chronic exposure to long-term moderate heat. The incidence has decreased substantially today because of the advent of modern central heating systems. Recently, we encountered a patient who developed EAI after 2 weeks of footbaths with Chinese herbal remedies, which she used to treat her acute ankle sprain. Alternative Chinese medicine, such as herbal footbath, is a prevalent medical practice to treat acute pains as well as many chronic musculoskeletal ailments among Chinese and Asian populations. It has also become increasingly popular in Western countries in the past decade. Herein, we would like to report an uncommon case of iatrogenic EAI caused by footbath and raise the attention of clinicians to such rare, potentially malignant-transforming, dermatosis.

Erythema ab igne (EAI) to rzadka choroba skóry (od czasu popularyzacji centralnego ogrzewania) charakteryzująca się siateczkowatymi zmianami rumieniowo-przebarwieniowymi wywołany-mi długotrwałą ekspozycją na promieniowanie podczerwone. Schorzenie przebiega zwykle łagodnie, niemniej przewlekłe narażenie na ciepło może skutkować pojawieniem się w obrębie naskórka komórek dysplastycznych, a nawet rozwojem raka kolczystokomórkowego. Patogeneza schorzenia wciąż nie jest w pełni poznana. Cel pracy. Przedstawienie trudności diagnostyczno-terapeutycznych związanych z EAI. Opis przypadku. Przedstawiono przypadek chorej z EAI, u której zmiany wystąpiły w wyniku stałego narażenia podudzi na ciepło emitowane przez urządzenie grzewcze w trakcie pracy w kwiaciarni, oraz piśmiennictwo dotyczące praktyki klinicznej, diagnostyki różnicowej i metod terapii tej choroby. Wnioski. Chociaż EAI jest schorzeniem rzadkim, konieczna jest wzmożona czujność onkologiczna u każdego pacjenta z tym rozpoznaniem. AbStrActIntroduction. Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a rare skin disease (since the common use of central heating) characterized by reticular, erythematous and hyperpigmented patches resulting from chronic exposure to infrared radiation. Although the condition is generally benign, chronic heat exposure can induce dysplasia and, rarely, squamous cell carcinoma. The pathogenesis of the disease is not yet fully understood. Objective. Presentation of the diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties in a patient with EAI. Case report. The patient had erythema ab igne that developed on the shins, due to the effect of a heating device used in the flower shop. The clinical presentation, differential diagnosis and available treatment options of the disease are described. Conclusions.
