Laparoscopic Treatment of Hepatic Hydatid Disease

Abstract: Surgery is still the main modality in the treatment of hepatic hydatid disease. Laparoscopic methods, with their low morbidity, have gained prominence in many fields and, in some cases, have nearly replaced open surgery. In this report, a laparoscopic method for the treatment of hepatic hydatid disease is described and the results in the first six cases are presented. The method involves the use of an aspirator-grinder apparatus designed specifically for laparoscopic surgery. The postoperative courses of the p… Show more

“…Various surgeons have used different aspiration/suction devices, like simple needle aspiration [15], suction with liposuction device [16], large-diameter transparent cannula [17], Palanivelu hydatid system [18], special trocar used to suspend the cyst against the abdominal wall [19], and an aspiratorgrinder apparatus [20].…”

“…It is very hard to evacuate the cyst without spreading. We believe that processing new instruments for this purpose will help a lot [8, 10]. To minimize the spreading risk, pericystectomy can be used in selected locations of the cysts [11, 12].…”

“…A more conservative approach is laparoscopic removal of the cysts and endoscopic sphincterotomy for intrabiliary rupture or external biliary fistulas. 58,59 Postoperative morbidity in laparoscopic studies ranges from 8% to 25%, 50,60 while in open series varies from 12% to 63%. 43,46 The treatment-related death after laparoscopy is almost zero, while in open series it ranges from 0% to 3%.…”
