Laparoscopic Resection of Benign Stromal Tumor of the Stomach

Abstract: Laparoscopic surgery has recently become commonplace in the general surgeon's armamentarium of surgical approaches to many problems. This has been seen most notably with laparoscopic cholecystectomies. Herein is reported a case of an incidental benign stromal tumor of the stomach being resected laparoscopically.

“…This facilitates complete resection while minimizing the risk of tumor spillage. Lukaszczyk and Preletz [17] reported the first laparoscopic resection of a gastric GIST in 1992. The tumor was noted incidentally during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and resected using an Endo-GIA 30 laparoscopic stapler (Tyco AutoSuture, Norwalk CT, USA).…”

“…The first case of laparoscopic gastric leiomyoma resection was reported in 1992. 5 This leiomyoma was found incidentally during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Since then, various laparoscopic approaches to leiomyoma have been discussed.…”

“…Therefore, major anatomical resections are not required for a number of GISTs (33) in which case minimally invasive surgery is performed, particularly for gastric GISTs (34). The first report of a laparoscopically excised gastric GIST was published in 1992 (35), and there is evidence that the technique is effective with minimal morbidity and mortality (36). Endoscopic dissection is gaining acceptance as a new procedure for submucosal GIST and attains minimal morbidity and mortality (37).…”
