Laparoscopic cystostomy in pigs: Technique and comparison with traditional open cystostomy for surgical stress

Abstract: Cystostomy is a common procedure in veterinary surgery. We describe a technique for laparoscopic cystostomy (LC group; n = 7) in Bama miniature pigs and compare the surgical stress induced by this procedure to open cystostomy (OC group; n = 7). A three-portal approach was used for laparoscopic cystostomy. First, we placed 2 simple interrupted sutures between the ventral body wall and urinary bladder. Then, a purse-string suture was placed in the urinary bladder wall, approximately 1 cm cranially to the two sut… Show more

“…Minimally invasive surgery has become increasingly popular in veterinary medicine and is often recommended as the preferential treatment method for elective procedures (Matyjasik et al 2011;Zhang et al 2014). Laparoscopic or laparoscopic-assisted cryptorchidectomy is recommended for elective removal of retained testis in dogs and cats because of the decrease in morbidity rates, improved visualization, and safety (Miller et al 2004;Mayhew 2009;Runge et al 2014).…”

“…However, laparoscopic liver surgery remains technically challenging due to the greater risk of bleeding. Compared to human medicine, laparoscopic hepatectomy is rarely used in veterinary surgery, mostly because of the expense of the instruments and the complexity of the procedure (Yoshida et al 2019;Zhang et al 2014b). Beagles are important experimental research animals because their immune responses and metabolic pathways are similar to those of humans, and they are relatively easy to manage and perform procedures on (Ferreira et al 2019;Frezza and Wachtel 2006;Tao et al 2016).…”
