This study aimed to describe and analyze the spokesmen's politeness strategies and gender bias in their utterances when making a marriage proposal in Manggarai, Indonesia. This study was under the philosophy of interpretivism with the employment of descriptive qualitative design. Six spokesmen in three different marriage proposals were the main source of data. Since the researchers were participant observers, relevant data notes were taken. To support the observation data, the researchers conducted interviews and documentation studies. Dwelling pragmatic theory, the obtained data were analyzed through some stages: data reduction, data display, and drawing a conclusion. It is discovered that on record without redressive consisting of positive and negative type is predominantly used as a strategy followed by redressive and off the record. In addition, gender bias was found in the use of the figurative language of metaphor, simile, and symbolism in the spokesmen’s utterances. In order to have effective and meaningful interpersonal relationships and communication, it is, therefore, crucial that we understand what to say and how to say it.

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengkaji tentang penanaman sikap sopan santun anak usia dini dalam budaya Jawa. Metode yang dilakukan menggunkan penelitian kualitatif yang bersifat studi pustaka. Sopan santun saat ini lebih buruk dibandingkan dengan zaman dulu, dilihat dari anak-anak sekarang tidak bisa basa. Sopan santun dalam hal berbahasa saat ini sangat perlu diperhatikan. Bahasa Jawa saat ini hampir punah. Bahasa jawa memiliki ciri khas mengenai tingkatan berbahasa yaitu basa ngoko, basa krama madyo, dan basa krama inggil. Penanaman sikap sopan santun dalam berbahasa dilakukan pada saat anak usia dini melalui pembiasaan dan modeling dari orang dewasa dalam berbahasa jawa yang baik dan benar pada kehidupan sehari-hari di lingkungan keluarga, sekolah maupun masyarakat. Penggunaan bahasa jawa dikatakan baik dan benar yaitu sesuai dengan tata karma (gaya bahasa), andhap-asor (merendahkan diri sembari meninggikan orang lain), dan tanggap ing sasmita (mampu menangkap makna yang tersembunyi). Ketiga konsep budaya tersebut saling keterkaitan dalam hal sikap sopan santun seseorang dalam budaya Jawa.

Conversational implicatures in “Negeri 5 Menara”: is the principle of politeness violated?

It is widely known that there are instances in which the principle of politeness is violated not only in verbal conversations but also in written ones such as those found in novels. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the violations of the principle of politeness in a novel in order to understand every hidden meaning in the conversations. This study is descriptive-qualitative in nature. The data used in this research were taken from the novel "Negeri 5 Menara" authored by Ahmad Fuadi. The data were collected using a document analysis process that included skimming, reading, and interpreting. The collected data were analyzed using an interactive analytical model, including data collection, data display, data reduction, and conclusion drawing. The findings suggest that Ahmad Fuadi's novel "Negeri 5 Menara" features implicatures going against the principle of politeness. The principle of the politeness has been violated in 73 instances, including 12 violations against the maxim of wisdom, six against the maxim of generosity, ten against the maxim of praise, 16 against the maxim of humility, eight against the maxim of sympathy, and 21 against the maxim of agreement. The maxim of generosity is the one that is violated the least frequently, whereas the maxim of agreement is the most frequently violated. The current findings suggest that it is important to comprehend the nuances of interactions with cultural underpinnings. In so doing, no one involved in a conversation will misunderstand what is being said. In the education context, the principle of politeness fosters collaboration between teachers and students, as well as positive behavior and motivation. Finally, the findings reflect bi/multilingualism by recognizing multiple languages that blur linguistic boundaries. Therefore, it is also possible to use the languages that students bring to classrooms as resources rather than as barriers to learning. Finally, suggestions for future research are also discussed.
