Languages may be differently distant from each other and their mutual intelligibility may be asymmetric. In this paper we introduce incom.py, a toolbox for calculating linguistic distances and asymmetries between related languages. incom.py allows linguist experts to quickly and easily perform statistical analyses and compare those with experimental results. We demonstrate the efficacy of incom.py in an incomprehension experiment on two Slavic languages: Bulgarian and Russian. Using incom.py we were able to validate three methods to measure linguistic distances and asymmetries: Levenshtein distance, word adaptation surprisal, and conditional entropy as predictors of success in a reading intercomprehension experiment.

Tematem artykułu jest nauczanie JPJO w oparciu o podobieństwa leksykalne i gramatyczne pomiędzy językiem polskim i językami wschodniosłowiańskimi w celu ułatwienia i przyspieszenia procesu akwizycji. Po wprowadzeniu do teoretycznego zakresu badań przedstawiają się autorską koncepcję psycholingwistycznych badań empirycznych oraz wyniki projektu badawczego, prezentującego opis sekwencji akwizycji wybranych elementów polskiej morfoskładni. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono implikacjom glottodydaktycznym przedstawionych wyników badań. Szczegółowo omawiana jest koncepcja programów nauczania i materiałów do szybkiego nauczania JPJO dla Słowian wschodnich by ułatwić integrację językową we społeczeństwie polskim w kontekście obecnego kryzysu humanitarnego w Ukrainie.

The article focuses on phenomena of cross-lingual comprehension mediated by a bridge language. In a web-based experiment, German speaking subjects – without any previous knowledge of Bulgarian – translate written Bulgarian stimuli relying on some knowledge of Russian. We investigate the importance of the selected individual and linguistic factors for success in mediated receptive multilingualism. Proficiency in reading in Russian and orthographic distance between Russian and Bulgarian cognates are the most important predictors.
