Language Development of Term and Preterm Children During the First Five Years of Life

Abstract: SUMMARY Language development during the first five years is reported for 114 high‐risk preterm children (20 with varying degrees of cerebral palsy) and 97 healthy term children. Most stages of language development occurred at slightly later ages among the neurologically unimpaired preterm children than among those born at term. “…In contrast to the report of Sørensen and colleagues (3), our results showed an inverse association between maternal parity and cognitive function, i.e., our results showed that first borns have higher MDI scores. The association between higher maternal parity and poorer cognitive outcome corroborated previous findings (39,40), which demonstrated that parity was The data for all 72 twins were used for the linear regression study. Model 2 was adjusted for birth head circumference, gender and gestational age.…”

Fine motor, gross motor, and language development were classified qualitatively according to developmental milestones on the basis of data from Largo et al 7 and Touwen 1984 8 : normal (within the 10th and 90th centile); mildly abnormal (delay less than 1 year below the 10th centile); and severely abnormal (delay more than 1 year). Children at 18 months of age were graded as abnormal if they did not walk independently (gross motor area), did not use pincer grasp (fine motor), or showed no language comprehension (language).…”
