Language and Symbolic Play in Toddlers

Abstract: Language-play relations were examined in 110 18-month-old toddlers by observing their play actions in the Symbolic Play Test and assessing their language skills with the CDI parental report and the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Signi cant associations between both language comprehension and production (vocabulary, use of suf xes, utterance length) and play were found when percentage of symbolic play was used as the measure of play competence. “…More specifically, the use of early symbolic actions and communicative gestures in particular and also comprehensive as well as expressive skills at 12 months correlated with comprehensive skills one and a half years later. The relationship between symbolic play and language comprehension has also been found in some earlier studies (Lyytinen, Poikkeus, & Laakso, 1997;Tamis-LeMonda & Bornstein, 1994), suggesting that language -play relations are likely to be specialized rather than global. As for expressive scale score at 30 months, the communication composite score CSBS-Total at 12 moths as well as the use of gestural and verbal communicative means and also reciprocity during the CSBS test procedure correlated with it positively.…”

“…Morphemes rather than words were used as the use of suffixes is an essential feature of Finnish which is a highly inflected language. In previous studies within the JLD (Lyytinen P et al 1997, found a high correspondence between parental reports (MCDI) and children's performance in language tests (Reynell Developmental Language Scales [RDLS;Reynell and Huntley 1987] at 1 1 ⁄ 2 and 2 1 ⁄ 2 years, and the Bayley Scales of Infants Development II at 2 years; Bayley 1993). This supports the validity of the MCDI as a measure of early language development.…”

“…The results of Lyytinen et al (1997) showed significant concurrent associations between the language of 18-montholds and their symbolic play. On the symbolic play measures the relationships were higher between play and language comprehension, than between play and language production.…”
