“…Breeding records included nest locations (Red Kite, Little Owl, Northern Lapwing) or singing males during the breeding period (Skylark, Woodlark, Whinchat, Red-backed Shrike, Corn Bunting and Yellowhammer) and were obtained from four data sources: species survey data from official databases of the federal states, inventories within SPA, the German Common Breeding Bird Survey (GCBBS) and private data of experts working on these species (Table 2). The GCBBS includes four visits per breeding season and takes place on 1300 study plots of 1 km 2 size following a random sampling design stratified according to land-use and ecological regions and covering the entire terrestrial area of Germany (Hoffmann-Kroll et al, 2003). Bird data from 937 of 1300 study plots in Germany (Bibby et al, 2000) were digitized and used for our modelling.…”

“…Assessment of the quality of habitats on a wider landscape scale (not only in legally protected parts, but also in other landscapes) is rather unique. Similar studies are known from Germany [40] and the USA [41]. Other studies only focus on small groups of habitats or on selected habitats, mainly concentrated on plant species diversity.…”

“…The GCBBS takes place on 1,300 study plots of 1 km 2 which were selected according to the Ecological Area Sampling scheme (EAS). EAS follows a stratified random sampling design, with the stratification based on land use and ecological regions, across the entire terrestrial area of Germany (Hoffmann-Kroll et al 2003). The GCBBS plots were monitored by highly qualified volunteers in the course of four visits per breeding season (10 March-20 June) using line transect counts of around 3-4-km length inside each recording plot.…”
