Landscape ethnoecological knowledge base and management of ecosystem services in a Székely-Hungarian pre-capitalistic village system (Transylvania, Romania)

Abstract: BackgroundPrevious studies showed an in-depth ecological understanding by traditional people of managing natural resources. We studied the landscape ethnoecological knowledge (LEEK) of Székelys on the basis of 16-19th century village laws. We analyzed the habitat types, ecosystem services and sustainable management types on which village laws had focused.MethodsSzékelys had self-governed communities formed mostly of “noble peasants”. Land-use was dominated by commons and regulated by village laws framed by the… Show more

“…In spite of this, we are losing ES at an alarming rate (Cardinale et al 2012). Short-sighted decisions damage 'nature's free goods', as concluded by a Transylvanian decision-maker in as early as 1786 (Molnár et al 2015) in Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania -very close to the region where the ecosystem assessment presented in this paper took place. Amid the enormous environmental challenges of the 21 century, this conclusion is more relevant today than it has ever been.…”

“…Three main periods can be distinguished that influenced landscape and value changes (Matei 2013): the pre-socialist (before 1947), socialist , and capitalistic/democratic period (after 1990). Historically, the Szeklerland was a privileged region of the Hungarian Kingdom with self-governed communities of peasants, where commons pool resources were regulated by village laws (Molnár et al 2015). This medieval structure informally survived in Erd} ovidék until the newly formed socialist Romania reorganized its administrative divisions (1950)(1951)(1952)(1953)(1954)(1955)(1956)(1957)(1958)(1959)(1960)(1961)(1962)(1963)(1964)(1965)(1966)(1967)(1968).…”

“…dominated lowland hay meadows and in the vicinity of the Niraj (Nyárád) river traditionally mown lowland hay meadows with Sanguisorba officinalis L. are present. Agricultural fields (13%) are typically extensively cultivated, reflecting historical land use and property systems [63]). From the two main rivers, Târnava Mică (Kis-Küküllő) has broad meanders and gallery forests of Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.…”
