The mobile internet has already become an important technology due to the higher internet users and the several benefits of the adoption. However, the investigation on the adoption of mobile internet and the exploration of the internet adoption on palm oil productivity is relatively rare. This study aims to determine the factors influencing mobile internet adoption and its implication on the productivity of palm oil farmers. There are two techniques used to achieve the aim of this study, namely logistic regression and linear multiple regression. This research involved 119 palm oil farmers in Siak Regency. The result is that palm oil farmers' adoption of mobile internet is determined by education, training size, ease of use, and productivity. The mobile internet adoption has not significantly affected the productivity of palm oil farmers. This research only limited in mobile internet usage due to the higher of trend in this technology. Therefore, the further research could be applied by using another technology related on internet access.

Welfare implications of participating in agri‐value chains among vegetable farmers in Northern Ghana

This study investigates the welfare implications of agri-value chain participation utilizing data collected from 423 smallholder vegetable farmers in northern Ghana. The endogenous switching regression (ESR) model estimates the determinants of agri-value chain participation and their associated impacts on farmers' welfare, measured by household income and consumption expenditure. The ESR model accounts for selectivity bias associated with observed and unobserved factors. We find that agri-value chain participation improves vegetable farmers' welfare. Participation significantly increases household income and consumption expenditure by about 22% and 40%, respectively. Our results also reveal that agri-value chain participation is significantly determined by education, household size, mobile phone ownership, irrigation, farm size, farmer group membership, and extension visits. Variables such as education, access to irrigation, farm size, access to credit, farmer group membership, and extension are the significant determinants of farmers' welfare [EconLit Citations: D24, Q12, Q18].

The dynamics of rural human-environment systems in developing countries have increasingly been attracting attention. Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a valuable simulation tool for detecting complex feedback loops in rural human-environment systems with a ‘bottom-up’ approach. However, such models require the prerequisite analysis of household typology to simulate households’ decision-making process, where a gap exists between having accurate classification criteria and a simplified modeling framework. This study aimed to develop a household typology for two selected counties in southwest China based on multivariate analysis techniques and the classification tree method. Four categories of socioeconomic variables, including labor conditions, resource endowments, economic status, and social connections, were screened as possible factors impacting agriculture practice decisions. The results showed that household diversification in the study area was mainly determined by diversified livelihood strategies of off-farm work, livestock breeding, subsidy dependence, and traditional planting. Five distinct household types were identified: non-farm households, part-time households, livestock breed households, subsidized households, and traditional planting households. The household types were associated with specific cropland use behaviors, and their decision-making behaviors were verified with bounded rationality theory (where the maximization of profits is the primary goal). The quantitative classification criteria obtained in this study were clear and could be easily identified and used by ABMs. Our study provides a basis for further simulation of the complicated rural human-environment systems in southwest China.
