A B S T R A C TLand use/land cover modeling is extremely important to land planners, since it allows creating projects and scenarios with possible future threats to ecosystems. Thus, the aim of the present study was to apply the CA-Marvok model to simulate the land use and land cover for the year 2030 in the environmental protection area of the Banhado Grande (EPABG), Brazil. Thus, two images Landsat 5 TM and 8 OLI from 2007 and 2017 were classified. The CA-Markov model was applied through the Land Change Modeler (LCM) tool of the TerrSet software. The results show that the soybean class was the one that most grew between 2007 and 2017, going from 5,891 to 33,844 ha. The simulation shows that 45,375 ha of soybeans will be cultivated at EPABG by 2030, replacing mainly floodplain areas and wetlands (WL's). In view of the above, it is concluded that the simulation of land use land cover for 2030 showed that soybean cultivated area will correspond to approximately 33% of land use and land cover in EPABG. Therefore, it is recommended to create the EPABG management plan focused on the maintenance of the biodiversity and wetlands of the EPABG. Simulação das mudanças no uso e cobertura da terra em áreas úmidas através do modelo CA-Markov R E S U M OA modelagem do uso e cobertura da terra é de vital importância para os planejadores do território, pois permite a criação de projetos e cenários com possíveis ameaças futuras aos ecossistemas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é aplicar o modelo CA-Marvok para simular o uso e cobertura da terra para o ano de 2030, na Área de Proteção Ambiental do Banhado Grande (EPABG), Brasil. Para isto, foram classificadas duas imagens Landsat 5 TM e 8 OLI de 2007 e 2017. O modelo de CA-Markov foi aplicado através da ferramenta Land Change Modeler (LCM) do software TerrSet. Os resultados mostram que a classe de soja foi a que mais cresceu entre 2007 e 2017, passando de 5.891 ha para 33.844. A simulação mostra que para 2030 serão cultivados na EPABG 45.375 ha de soja, substituindo principalmente áreas de várzeas e campos úmidos. Em vista disso, conclui-se que a simulação do uso e cobertura da terra para 2030 mostrou que a área cultivada de soja corresponderá à aprximadamente 33% do uso e cobertura da terra na EPABG. Assim, recomendase a criação do plano de manejo da EPABG, com vistas, principalmente, na manutenção da biodiversidade e também das áreas úmidas da EPABG. The Amazon region has experienced a rapid rate of deforestation and land use change as a result of establishment of agricultural settlements, resulting from public policies designed to promote rural development. We analyzed land use patterns and changes in the central region of Roraima, northern Brazil, testing the hypothesis that the anthropic pressure based on the conversion of natural vegetation (forest ecotone zone and open areas of savanna and campinaranas) on agriculture and pasture, has led to the decline of forest resilience, and has not promoted development in lands converted in agricultural colonization projects, a process exacerbated by practices of burning. Satellite images from between 1984 to 2017, with field-collected data and geoprocessing techniques, allowed interpretation and analysis of seven land-use classes. Agriculturally-based human impacts were greatest in forest areas, with forest loss rates being 6.4 times greater than regeneration rates. The 39.3% reduction in natural non-forest vegetation types exceeded that of forest loss (23.8%). Repeated fires resulted in a 627.1% increase in forest fragmentation in areas heavily impacted by fire. Our study revealed that, over 33 years, deforestation and transitions of land to non-conservation uses did not lead to a system with highly productive agricultural practices, but to extensive impoverished, and degraded subsistence. The main reason was the basic unsuitability of the region´s extremely acidic/dystrophic soils on which settlements have been founded, and the predominance of low-tech, family-based, agriculture and the absence of the required technology for attaining better results.

Dynamics of land use and land cover in the agricultural frontier of the Brazilian Amazon: driving forces of changes and future scenarios The Amazon`s agriculture frontier is located in the ecotone zone between the Amazon rain forest and the Cerrado (Brazilian savanic formations). The region presents high biodiversity concentrations along with a heterogeneous landscape, comprised of different types of vegetational physiognomies and land uses. In this frontier region, the Upper Xingu River Basin (UXRB), draining approximately 170,000 km 2 in Mato Grosso state produces 2% of the world's soybeans and 0.2% of the world's consumed cattle meat. However, due to their heterogeneous landscapes, these frontiers are usually poorly represented by general models portraying land use and land cover detection and change, or native vegetation loss. Our goal in this research was to map land use change in the Upper Xingu River Basin and to model vegetation loss in the region. In the first chapter we present an overall overview of different concepts that were applied throughout this research. In the second chapter, we show the results of a hierarchical classification scheme built with three levels of information for improving how land cover and land use maps capture the region's heterogeneity. We observed that agricultural intensification occurred mainly in the Amazon while the Cerrado has undergone an expansion in agricultural area. In the last decades, the region has been experiencing a transition from a pioneer stage of development to a consolidated frontier, with commodity-oriented development. Thus, increases in agricultural areas are tied to both international markets and the American dollar/Brazilian real ratio value. In the third chapter, we compare different data sources to identify two distinct tree loss processes: deforestation and disturbance. We observed an impressive difference between datasets built to detect both disturbance and deforestation. This pattern is related to the dominant vegetation type and specificities in the different models. In the fourth chapter, we analyzed different spatial variables related to biophysical characteristics, infrastructure, economic development, and landscape composition and configuration to select a model which would adequately represent future deforestation, forest disturbance, and general native vegetation loss (including physiognomies other than forest). Our work shows that variables influence these processes in different ways, leading us to conclude that to tackle vegetation loss, both researchers and policy makers have to focus on processes other than the rain forest deforestation, which has been the traditional focus.
