Land Cover Changes along the Iron Curtain 1990–2006

Abstract: 95-115. -The article analyses land cover changes along the Iron Curtain in the period 1990-2006. CORINE land cover state and land cover change datasets are used to evaluate differences in land cover structure in 1990 and in land cover changes between the eastern (from former German Democratic Republic to Hungary) and western (former Federal Republic of Germany and Austria) border sections along the Iron Curtain. The results confirm different representation of individual land cover categories on the eastern and… Show more

“…The LU/LCC and anthropogenic impacts on forests in Europe from the mid-20th century have been examined by a number of researchers. Studies evaluating forest changes have been based on different data sources: statistical data (Bičík et al 2015), Earth Observation data (Griffiths et al 2014, Olofsson et al 2016, datasets derived from satellite data (Feranec et al 2007, Pekkarinen et al 2009, Kupková et al 2013. The forest LU/LCC analyses often focus on the quantification of forest change (Pekkarinen et al 2009, Potapov et al 2015, forest disturbances and degradation (Healey et al 2005), or methodological issues of the change detection (Mitchel et al 2017).…”

“…The land cover of the Czech borderlands has also reflected these population declines, with increases in forest cover and open fields, and decreases in arable land that have only accelerated during the post‐1990 period, as state‐sponsored subsidies evaporated (Kupkova et al. ) (Figure ).…”

“…Consequently, land-use changes occurred in the border landscape straddling the Iron Curtain. These changes were analyzed along the entire line of the Iron Curtain in Europe by Kupková, Bičík, and Najman (2013). In the Czech lands, the changes relating to Iron Curtain were combined with those resulting from the expulsion of roughly three million ethnic Germans between 1945and 1946(Bičík and Kabrda 2007Bičík and Štěpánek 1994;Rašín and Chromý 2010;Mares, Rasin and Pipan 2013).…”
