Lamellar Macular Hole-Associated Epiretinal Proliferation with Cystoid Changes: Long-term Follow-up

Abstract

Purpose: To present cystoid changes within epiretinal proliferation (EP) in a case of lamellar macular hole (LMH) without any underlying retinal disease. Methods: Case report Results: A 55-year-old female patient was referred with LMH. Visual acuity of the right eye (RE) was 20/25 and of the left eye (LE) 20/63. Funduscopy revealed a mild epiretinal membrane (ERM) in the RE and a round, reddish lesion in the fovea of the LE. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography of the LE confirmed the LMH and showed an EP. The patient was observed for eight and half years. During the follow-up the foveal atrophic cavity was first partially filled by a homogeneous tissue consistent with the density of EP. In the later course of the follow up, cystoid changes occurred within the EP. Conclusion: In a case of LMH, cystoid changes developed within the EP, resembling a cystoid macular edema without any other underlying retinal disorder. The clinican should kept this feature in mind to avoid unnecessary invasive intervention for the therapy of macular edema.
