Lake sediments in northern Scotland

Abstract: A survey of deep-water sediments in 11 lakes in northern Scotland showed that only under certain conditions does a complete and conformable series of deposits accumulate. In lochs exposed to strong winds there may be no permanent settling of organic sediments in water depths of up to 50 m. Three lake cores (representative of three regions of northern Scotland), which proved to be complete and conformable profiles, were analysed in detail for pollen and certain chemical elements; one was also analysed for diato… Show more

“…Pennington, 1970;Smith, 1970;Pennington et al, 1972;Lowe, 1977, 1979) and upland Wales (Seddon, 1962;Trotman, 1963 ;Moore and Chater, 1969;Crabtree, 1972). Within the Principality, however, a marked Juniperus expansion is not found at all sites, for the lowland profiles of Glanllynnau (Simpkins, 1974) and Esgyrn Bottom near Fishguard (Slater and Seymour, 1977) exhibit low frequencies (although it is possible that at the latter site at least, a full Flandrian record was not obtained), while on the Cardigan Bay coast at Aberaeron, jfuniperus pollen is absent from a complete Lateglacial/Flandrian sequence and at Clarach, some 25 km to the north, juniper appears to peak in the Stadial sediments and is in decline in pollen zone IV (Taylor, 1973).…”

“…Following the pioneering work of Pennington (1970) and Turner (1970) pollen analytical studies in upland areas have tended to concentrate on data from either blanket mire sequences (see reviews in Tipping 1994;Simmons and Innes 1987;Caseldine 1999) or lakes (Pennington 1965;Pennington et al 1972). Although these study sites have provided detailed information about the nature and timing of human impact it is difficult to make inferences about the spatial extent of human impact on the landscape (Edwards 1979;Brown 1999).…”
