Lactobacillus rhamnosus Encapsulated in Alginate/Chitosan Microgels Manipulates the Gut Microbiome to Ameliorate Salt-Induced Hepatorenal Injury

Abstract: As the essential regulator of intestinal bacterial diversity, probiotics are a potential treatment for chronic high-salt diet (HSD)–induced metabolic dysfunction. Probiotic cells entrapped in microgels have been confirmed as being more effective than free cells in protecting bacteria against unfavorable conditions, that is, enhancing their stress resistance. This study explored the physiological mechanism by which probiotic microgels relieve HSD–induced hepatorenal injury. Herein, Lactobacillus rhamnosus was e… Show more

“…In addition to ameliorating antioxidative stress effects, B. longum also limits weight gain, inflammation and metabolic function ( Alard et al, 2021 ). The gene expression of citric acid was obviously upregulated in group D compared with group C. As an antioxidant ( Zhang et al, 2022 ), citric acid shows strong health benefits combined with B. longum ( Bianchi et al, 2019 ). Changes in metabolites reveal alterations at the endogenous substance or gene expression level, which makes the research objectives more intuitive.…”

“…After homogenization and sonication, the supernatant was transferred to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) glass vials for coupled identification of gut microbial hosts using an Agilent 7890A GC system (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA). Related metabolites were analyzed according to previously reported methods using Pegasus HT time-of-flight (TOF)-MS (Leco, Saint Joseph, MI, USA) ( 27 ).…”

“…AOS has been found to reduce Salmonella colonization and promote the improvement of intestinal barrier in broiler chickens ( Table 1 ; Yan et al, 2011 ). AOS ameliorate high-salt-induced intestinal injury by increasing barrier and absorption functions by increasing the abundance of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Faecalibaculum ( Table 2 ) and Mucispirillum ( Table 1 ; Zhang Z. et al, 2022 ). AOS Administration significantly upregulate the levels of IL-10 and TLR-3, and gut barrier biomarkers claudin-1 and mucin 2 (MUC2; Zhuge et al, 2020 ).…”
