Lactic-acid bacteria increase the survival of marine shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, after infection with Vibrio harveyi

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThis study evaluated the survival, post-larvae quality, and the population of bacteria in Litopenaeus vannamei after the addition of two strains of lactic-acid bacteria (2 and B6) experimentally infected by Vibrio harveyi. Fifteen hundred nauplii were distributed in 20 L capacity tanks with four replicates. The survival of control animals was lower (21%) than that of animals fed with the strains B6 (50%) and 2 (44%). Total bacterial population in the water and larvae, as well as of the Vibrio ss… Show more

“…However, most studies on probiotics and marine crustaceans have been performed on a small laboratory scale and under controlled laboratory conditions (Vieira et al, 2007(Vieira et al, , 2008(Vieira et al, , 2010Pham et al, 2014;Ferreira et al, 2015). Because laboratory conditions do not always match the conditions on commercial farms, there is a need for studies on the use of probiotics on commercial farms.…”

“…The lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum, was isolated from 30±3g L. vannamei broodstock shrimp reared at the same laboratory (Vieira et al, 2007). This bacterium was maintained in the CPQBA collection of microorganisms, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, under access number 007 07 DRM01.…”

“…The lactic acid bacterium L. plantarum was isolated from 30±3 g L. vannamei broodstock shrimps, reared at the same laboratory (Vieira et al, 2007). This bacteria was identified based on a series of physiological and biochemical parameters (Kit API 50CH).…”

“…Nevertheless, the period in which bacterial microbiota of shrimp digestive tract remains modified, and the interval in which the immune system is stimulated after probiotic administration is still unknown. Lactobacillus plantarum has already been reported to enhance Litopenaeus vannamei larvae survival and resistance to Vibrio harveyi challenge (Vieira et al, 2007).…”
