“…The intriguing point in the current study is the assessment of using PG analogues for scalp AA, rather than its usual trials on AA of the eyelashes and eyebrows [6,7,8,9,10,11,12] that yielded conflicting results. Recently, Khidhir et al [16] demonstrated that the PG-related glaucoma drug bimatoprost can stimulate growth in non-eyelash hair follicles in mice in vivo and in human scalp hair follicles in dynamic organ culture, mirroring the stimulation of eyelashes known to occur in vivo.…”

“…The results of the current study are in accordance with several others [11,12,21] which documented both the efficacy and safety of this line of therapy in the treatment of such cases. On the other hand, several other studies [8,9,10] argued against the postulated value of using PG analogues in the treatment of AA, as they demonstrated a lack of efficacy. Several points could offer an explanation for this discrepancy.…”

“…Although reports about effective clinical response have been found [36], two randomized controlled studies demonstrated an efficacy of topical latanoprost in the AA [37][38][39].…”

“…These treatments are typically used for open-angle glaucoma however eyelash hypertrichosis was noted as a pleasing side effect. Response rates have been variable with one study showing 45% complete or moderate regrowth of eyelashes over 2 years using latanoprost whilst another study showed no significant response to latanoprost or bimatoprost over 16 weeks [32,33]. Clinicians should recommend protective glasses to patients with extensive and complete loss of eyelashes to protect the eyes from dust, grit and debris.…”
