Laboratory Scale Evaluation of Fertiliser Factory Wastewater Treatment through Membrane Distillation and Reverse Osmosis

Abstract: The incumbent water stress scenario imposes wastewater valorisation to freshwater, promoting technology for its effective treatment. Wastewater from fertiliser factories is quite problematic because of its relevant acidity and solute content. Its treatment through vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) was evaluated through laboratory scale tests at 40 °C and 25 mbar vacuum pressure with polytetrafluoroethylene and polypropylene flat-sheet porous membranes. The wastewater from a partially disused Italian industria… Show more

“…As a further concentration step, a vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) was applied. The details of the laboratory plant for testing are reported in previously published papers [30,31]. A total of 15 hollow fiber membranes made of polypropylene (Accurel PP S6/2, Membrana, Germany) with a length of 30 cm were arranged in a module where the fiber extremities were potted with an epoxy resin in a PVC tube.…”

“…where m w and m d are the masses of impregnated and dry membrane, respectively; ρ oc and ρ pol are the 1-octanol density (0.83 g/cm 3 ) and the PVDF density (1.8 g/cm 3 ) at 25 • C. The infrared spectroscopy analyses were performed using a Vertex 70 (Bruker, Billerica, MA, USA) FT-IR spectrometer operated in ATR (attenuated total reflection) mode.…”

“…In this context, membrane distillation (MD) has recently gained increasing attention because of its theoretical ability completely reject non-volatile solutes, even when treating highly concentrated feed streams such as reverse osmosis brines [1] and industrial wastewaters [2,3].…”

“…Many methods have been proposed to treat industrial wastewater. Tagliabue et al [25] used reverse osmosis to treat fertilizer factory wastewater with high solute content. Kang [26] used a biological method to treat wastewater from heavy crude oil recovery.…”
