Laboratory Investigation on Gelation Behavior of Xanthan Crosslinked With Borate Intended to Combat Lost Circulation

Abstract: This thesis addresses the application of xanthan/borate gel for lost circulation treatment. Steady shear viscometry method was applied in which the gel system was under constant shear rate while apparent viscosity was being recorded. The apparent viscosity was constant up to initial gelation time in which viscosity started to build up. Four parameters: initial and final gelation times as well as initial and final viscosities are defined and a correlation is derived between those parameters and four variables: … Show more

“…Optimum selection of drilling fluid is a key factor in minimizing drilling time and cost (Mokhtari and Ozbayoglu 2010;Salih et al 2016). Due to cost, environmental issues, water-based drilling fluid is more preferable and attractive option than oil and synthetic fluids for drilling oil and gas wells in sensitive areas where oil base fluids are not desired.…”

“…With an increasing time, the viscosity of the system keeps basically unchanged firstly, then increases rapidly, and finally tends to be stable. The gelation process of polymer gel experienced longer periods of induction stage, cross-linking stage and stabilization stage [ 6 , 7 ]. According to the research results of Mehdi mokhtari, the gelation time is divided into initial gelation time (IGT) and final gelation time (FGT).…”

“…Gelation time and gel strength are the most important performance indicators of polymer gel [ 5 ]. The recent research results on the dynamic gelation process in porous media show that the dynamic gelation process can be divided into three stages: induction stage, cross-linking stage and stabilization stage [ 6 , 7 ]. However, the gelled liquid is sheared when it passes through the rock pore throat, which results in significant changes in dynamic gelation time, gel strength and gel speciation.…”

“…In this paper, the gelation time, which is divided into Initial Gelation Time (IGT) and Final Gelation Time (FGT), was determined by measuring viscosity [3]. IGT is the time of sudden increase in viscosity.…”

“…According to Sydansk's gel-strength code, the gel strength is divided into several levels to determine gelation time quickly and effectively. Mokhtari et al [3] divided gelation time into Initial Gelation Time (IGT) and Final Gelation Time (FGT) with the method of measuring apparent viscosity versus time, and the history of viscosity change during the process of gelation could be recorded. Gao et al [4] measured the storage modulus and loss modulus and obtained the gelation time by the Winter-Chambon criterion [5].…”
