Laboratory and Field Assessments of Oral Vibrio Vaccine Indicate the Potential for Protection against Vibriosis in Cultured Marine Fishes

Abstract: Vibriosis is one of the most common threats to farmed grouper; thus, substantial efforts are underway to control the disease. This study presents an oral vaccination against multiple Vibrio spp. in a marine fish with double booster immunisation. The Vibrio harveyi strain VH1 vaccine candidate was selected from infected groupers Epinephelus sp. in a local farm and was formalin inactivated and combined with commercial feed at a 10% ratio (v/w). A laboratory vaccination trial was conducted for seventy days. The i… Show more

“…The IgM tests of the immunised fish supported the idea that, in the field, vaccinations do not provide protection for the duration of the complete productive cycle [ 39 ], and in this study, it was around 14 weeks. The antibody pattern in the field was different compared to the experimental trial under a controlled environment [ 22 ]. Ref.…”

“…Biofilm (BF) are Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) attached to the surface of microorganisms and serve as a protective barrier for microorganisms to enhance their tolerance to environmental stresses, such as desiccation, osmotic pressure, UV radiation, disinfection and antibiotic therapy ( 283 ). The biofilm can protect the antigen components of the vaccine from the destruction of the digestive fluid as it reaches the gut lymphoid tissue, allowing the oral vaccine to perform its proper immune function ( 284 , 285 ). Due to the high cost of the encapsulated material and its large amount of use, it is unrealistic in practical application.…”
