The Galician archaeological record presents certain problems for the preservation of most types of organic remains, so we must explain the past based on inorganic materials. In particular, the Bell Beaker communities have been explained almost exclusively by the presence of Bell Beaker ceramics, excluding all sites that do not contain this cultural element. This paper will present a summary of the sites classified as funerary in nature in Galicia. The depositional characteristics, the degree of fragmentation of the vessels, their position in the sites and the grave goods will be considered in terms of biographical reconstruction. The conclusion is that while only a few of the Bell Beakers had a truly funerary role, their more significant function was to facilitate the ritualised appropriation of Neolithic space as material symbols of a communal 'Bell Beaker' identity, as opposed to metal grave goods which designated individual status.

Se presenta el estado de la cuestión sobre los yacimientos y restos arqueológicos adscritos a la época romana y castrexa, englobados en el área geográfica comprendida entre la Punta de Estaca de Bares y la Ría de Ribadeo, en el sector occidental del Mar Cantábrico. En esta zona se conocen numerosos yacimientos adscritos a este espacio temporal, entre los que podemos destacar media centena de castros, una decena de asentamientos abiertos -comúnmente denominados villae-, así como algunas explotaciones auríferas, unas pocas instalaciones artesanales, y diversos hallazgos sin contexto arqueológico definido. El estudio historiográfico se completa con el análisis de una serie de materiales arqueológicos que se ha llevado a cabo en el Museo de Prehistoria e Arqueoloxía de Vilalba.

During the Late Iron Age two processes developed in Iberia: a process of growing demography and a trend towards nucleated settlements. Both processes ended in the appearance of large fortified settlements (oppida), well known through archaeology and written sources. As in other areas of Europe, there were probably substantial differences between settlements, in terms of geographical setting, size, form, and function. In the end, the first cases of urbanization at the end of the Iron Age are presented as changing and multi-faceted entities in space and time, with similarities and unique characteristics. We discuss this process and the insights we can glean from it. Two worlds, the Mediterranean in the east and south and the Atlantic in north and west, had contacts through inland territories and navigations. The exploration of the relationships between oppida, demography, social organization, and urbanization is considered in this paper.
