This paper is a qualitative analysis of the effects of accompagnement, a support framework, on recovery trajectories of people with long-term homelessness and severe psychiatric disorders during 24 months in a Housing First-type program in France. A comprehensive methodology based on grounded theory was used to construct an interview guide, conduct multiple interviews with 35 Housing First participants sampled for heterogeneity, and produce memos on their trajectories before and after entering the program based on interview information. Thematic analysis of a representative subsample (n = 13) of memos identified 12 objective factors and 6 subjective factors key to the recovery process. An in-depth re-analysis of the memos generated four recovery themes: (1) the need for secure space favorable to self-reflexivity; (2) a “honeymoon” effect; (3) the importance of even weak social ties; (4) support from and hope among peers. Three challenges to recovery were identified: (1) finding a balance between protection and risk; (2) breaking downward spirals; (3) bifurcating the trajectory. This study provides new insight into the recovery process, understood as a non-linear transformation of an experience—the relationship between objective life conditions and subjective perception of those conditions—which reinforces protective support over risk elements.

A The COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on the organization of psychiatric care. The present study examines how care professionals experienced this period and faced these new constraints weighing on their professional practices. Based on a qualitative research methodology, 13 group interviews with healthcare professionals working in psychiatric wards were conducted in five countries in western Europe. To complement this, 31 individual interviews were carried out in Belgium and France. Public health measures hindered certain therapeutic activities, jeopardized communication, and obliged healthcare professionals to modify and adapt their practices. Confronted with a transformation of their usual roles, healthcare professionals feared a deterioration in the quality of care. Impossible to continue in-person care practices, they resorted to online videoconferencing which went against their idea of care in which the encounter holds an essential place. The lockdown contradicted efforts to co-build care pathways toward readaptation, social reintegration, and recovery, thus reviving the perception of psychiatric hospitalization based on isolation.

At the time, the authors were in the position of researchers and also of workers in care services to the population.Both researchers used the method of participating observation and interviews with different actors in the field.A reflection is made on the usage of open interviews with the homeless, trying to catch those people's points of view on the social services which they are users. Starting with examples of refusing, bargaining and accepting the interview proposal, it was concluded that interviews are an effective approach method to those people.However, the field data show that the interview appears to be more effective regarding the knowledge of the street environment, mainly, concerning the content ofthe interviewees' speech .It is discussed, on the interviews content, the context and who performs them, as well as the implicit and explicit negotiations on the process of fieldwork. Keywords: Investigative Techniques, The Homeless, Methods.Resumo: A partir do campo de duas pesquisas de Doutorado, uma realizada na França e outra no Brasil, junto a pessoas em situação de rua, discute-se a utilização de entrevistas como método de pesquisa em campo. As autoras ocupavam, na ocasião, a posição de pesquisadoras e também de trabalhadoras de serviços de atendimento à população. A metodologia utilizada articula a observação participante, a participação observante e a realização de entrevistas aprofundadas. As reflexões aqui apresentadas centram-se na discussão da aplicação de entrevistas semidiretivas, com o objetivo de apreender a opinião daqueles sujeitos sobre os serviços dos quais são usuários.Com a análise sobre a recusa à entrevista, sua aceitação ou situações intermediárias, aponta-se que a entrevista pode ser um método efetivo para se aproximar do ponto de vista dessa população. Entretanto, os dados de campo mostraram que se apresenta mais efetiva para conhecimento acerca do universo da rua do que, efetivamente, sobre o conteúdo proveniente dos discursos dos entrevistados.
