Recent international research in social science teaching highlights difficulties adolescents face when constructing social and citizenship awareness, and their own identity. To shed more light on this process, the present study is framed in the context of social science classrooms, and more specifically around how social and civic competence is developed via particular teaching methodologies and specific learning environments in Spain. The focus is on the analysis of democratic citizenship, as it is commonly accepted in the theoretical and epistemological bases of social sciences that citizenship education is one of the aims of the educational system. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of implementing two teaching units on the development of social and civic competence among 110 students in five secondary and high schools in Catalonia. A qualitative observational method is used to identify, describe and analyze the implementation and effects of both teaching units on a hermeneuticinterpretative basis. An ethnographic perspective is used to obtain accounts of education professionals and students. In addition, 19 field notes are analyzed using QSRNVIVO 12 software on two dimensions: citizenship and classroom climate. There are two main findings: first, regarding the formative value of both sequences regarding democratic, active and critical citizenship; the second, regarding the importance of the classroom environment created for this purpose by designing ad hoc learning spaces using active methodologies to contribute to the development of active and responsible citizenship. The conclusions highlight two important issues. The subject of History in secondary education should be vindicated as a key instrument to build democratic awareness, based on the skills of active and critical citizenship. Furthermore, there is a relationship between the development of critical and active citizenship and the creation of learning environments that foster reflection, analysis, interpretation and dialog. The implications of this study pose an important challenge for the study of social sciences. Initial teacher training methodology and syllabi should be reviewed, the importance of the Humanities in our society should be defended, and classrooms and schools should be democratized to promote active participation in citizenship education.

En los últimos años, se ha hablado mucho sobre los entornos escolares en las escuelas debido a la llegada de nuevas familias a áreas rurales y a la inclusión de estudiantes con Necesidades Educativas Especiales. Estos estudiantes pueden ser víctimas de diversos tipos de maltrato, bullying o acoso por parte de sus compañeros. Al mismo tiempo, los docentes son conscientes de que tienen poco conocimiento en cuanto a las relaciones interpersonales, a pesar de seguir el manual de convivencia desde el momento de la matrícula. Por lo tanto, en esta investigación se busca identificar los factores que afectan la convivencia con el objetivo de diseñar e implementar una propuesta pedagógica basada en la teoría de Johan Galtung y la cátedra de la paz. Se pretende evaluar el impacto de esta propuesta en relación con la teoría internacional y los factores abordados en la cátedra de la paz. La metodología utilizada fue cualitativa, teniendo en cuenta diferentes variables descriptivas obtenidas a través de los instrumentos utilizados. Además, se adoptó un enfoque de Investigación-Acción, trabajando con los informantes clave del quinto grado de educación primaria. Como resultado, se pudo observar que los participantes no estaban familiarizados con la teoría en un principio. Sin embargo, a través de los talleres realizados, se evidenció que los problemas y conflictos pueden resolverse mediante la comunicación asertiva y el respeto a las opiniones de los demás, especialmente cuando difieren de la mayoría. Estos son aspectos fundamentales en la sociedad del siglo XXI.

Introducción: En Colombia se identifican diferentes iniciativas para promover la formación de competencias ciudadanas. Objetivo: Este artículo analiza comparativamente tres experiencias significativas: Aulas en Paz, Cátedra de Paz con enfoque de cultura ciudadana y Taller Juegos de Negociación, teniendo como referente los Estándares Básicos de Competencias Ciudadanas del Ministerio de Educación Nacional. Métodología: Se utilizó una metodología cualitativa que implicó la revisión de 54 artículos académicos y 10 documentos de instituciones oficiales que permitieron identificar las experiencias referentes para el análisis. A partir de ello, se realizaron tres entrevistas semiestructuradas a los informantes clave de las experiencias para conocer con más detalle su organización. Por último, se revisa la adaptación de las experiencias significativas con los estándares, en cinco categorías de análisis: contenidos, metodologías, espacios de formación, evaluación y formación docente. Resultados: Se evidencia una integración parcial de los Estándares Básicos de Competencias Ciudadanas (EBCC) en las tres experiencias analizadas, pues en cada caso se encontraron aciertos y retos en su implementación. Conclusiones: El análisis realizado muestra cómo los EBCC, como lineamientos de política, pueden ser armonizados de forma directa e indirecta, lo cual puede orientar el diseño de nuevas experiencias significativas.
