Quevedo, Góngora y Lope compusieron, como la mayoría de los autores de los siglos xvi y xvii, sonetos funerales a los que, partiendo de una tradición muy estereotipada, consiguieron transferirles parte de su singularidad creativa. Los mecanismos de la retórica (el ornatus en este caso) nos permiten explicitar las transformaciones elocutivas y semánticas que estos poetas introducen para dotar a estos sonetos de su estilo poético y temperamento específicos: el más panegírico y heroico en Quevedo, el más admonitorio y moral en Góngora y el más íntimo y humano en Lope.
