Abstract
Sonnets on the Death of the Lion of the North: Lope de Vega and Quevedo on Gustavus Adolphus of SwedenThis articles examines how two Golden Age Spanish writers, Lope de Vega and Francisco de Quevedo, interpreted the figure of king Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden and how they received the news of his death in two sonnets dedicated to it. By examining the
Lope de Vega wrote in the prologue of Rimas (1604) that the romances “obligan a la corresponsión de las cadencias”. This article examines the accentual rhyme of four early romances by Lope to study the posible meaning of this quote. For some Golden Age researchers, this quote may refer to a technical diffi culty related to rythmic patterns derived from the accentual distribution of verses. For other researchers, this quote is related to the rhyme scheme. This study, which seems to confi rm the fi rst of these two hypotheses, also aims to draw the attention of metrics experts so that they may contribute to the analysis of this question with new resesarch.
