Abstract: Leaf-litter breakdown as a tool to assess the functional integrity of high Andean streams of Southern Ecuador. The ecological condition of tropical Andean rivers are threatened by many human activities including changes in land use and cover in watersheds. “…La productividad del agroecosistema depende de la materia orgánica, y para los sistemas silvopastoriles, las hojas de los árboles adicionan materia orgánica, concordando con lo que menciona Camargo (2018), y que posteriormente es descompuesta por la fauna edáfica, coincidiendo con Castro (2017) en su investigación sobre fauna edáfica. La presencia de los árboles con mezcla forrajera hace propicio el hábitat para organismos biorreguladores, fitófagos y comunidades bacterianas, en proporciones equilibradas permite potenciar la acción biótica del suelo, mantener las relaciones simbióticas y la estabilidad óptima del hábitat (Rincón et al, 2017;Vega et al, 2014).
