“…Cadmium (5-20 lM) induced ROS generation in PC12 and human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells, which causes apoptosis of neuronal cells [25,26]. In our study different concentrations of L-theanine (100, 500, 1000 lM) were selected according to other studies to test the anti-apoptosis effect induced by cadmium [9][10][11], results show that 500 and 1000 lM L-theanine can effectively reversed the cadmium induced apoptosis (Fig. 3a).…”

“…It can reduce the cerebral cortex and hippocampus nerve cell apoptosis after cerebral ischemia such as stroke [8], improve the learning and memorizing ability in mice [9]. In the previous study, we have found that L-theanine significantly inhibited ethanol-induced reduction of mouse antioxidant capability which included the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and level of glutathione (GSH) in vitro and in vivo [10]. In the CCl 4 -intoxicated rat model, L-theanine protected the rat liver from CCl 4 -induced injury by reducing TNF-a and IL-1b levels in the liver and serum, preventing CCl 4 -induced reduction of anti-oxidant capacity in mouse livers to relieve hepatocyte apoptosis [11].…”

“…There has been a growing interest in theanine as an ingredient for novel functional foods and as a dietary supplement [12]. It was also reported that theanine possessed antioxidant behavior and its property played an important role in attenuating β-amyloid-induced cognitive dysfunction and alcoholic liver injury [13, 14]. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that theanine may protect against organ injuries caused by DOX.…”

“…GSH is the most abundant thiol in mammals, and its major function is detoxification and protection against oxidants [26]. There are studies showing that chronic ethanol intake can result in an increase in GSH in human hepatoma cell line VL-17A [27].…”
