L-band femtosecond fiber laser based on a reduced graphene oxide polymer composite saturable absorber

Abstract: We demonstrate an L-band passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser emitting at 1599.43 nm wavelength at a pulse train of 5.68 MHz. The microfiber reduced graphene oxide composite behaves as a saturable absorber that was fabricated using in-situ wet chemical and dip-coating methods. During operation, a single-pulse soliton was observed at a mode-locking threshold of 40 mW. This is a few times lower than most of the previous assessments in the same class of wavelength band and graphene saturable absorbers. … Show more

“…The SNR value of 35.00 dB, the SA using Bi 2 Se 3 [79] was the lowest. According to the comparison results in table 1, the proposed Cu 2 Te thin film generated a pulse-width of 770 fs, slightly higher than rGO tapered [80] and antimonene tapered [46] with 568 fs and 552 fs, respectively. However, SA that used materials of WS 2 [77], rGO thin film [78], Bi 2 Se 3 [79], rGO tapered [80], and BP-based SA [81] have a pulse-width greater than 800 fs.…”

“…Table 1 shows the comparison of the performance of modelocked laser using Cu 2 Te thin film with various types of SA, such as in [46,[77][78][79][80][81]. The wavelength range of interest is presented from 1565 nm to 1625 nm, as summarized in table 1.…”

“…[ 165 ] A typical example for the flame‐brushing technique is by heating the optical fiber with an oxy‐LPG flame and pulling the optical fiber to reduce its waist diameter through a translational stage thus forming the tapered fiber as presented in Figure a. [ 167 ] The tapered fiber induces strong evanescent field around its waist region, allowing for the interaction with an absorptive materials accompanied with rapid heat dissipation. [ 168,169 ] The limitation of the tapered fiber is its fragility as the tapered region of a tapered fiber could be easily tapered down to sub‐μm sizes.…”

“…Various methods have been proposed for graphenebased SA fabrication. These include chemical vapor deposition [2], mechanical exfoliation [5], ultrasonication [6], electrochemical exfoliation [7][8] and a dip coating method [9]. The selection of these methods is highly influenced by the realization cost, performance of fabricated SA and class of graphene.…”
