KWS-1 high-resolution small-angle neutron scattering instrument at JCNS: current state

Abstract: The KWS‐1 small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument operated by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) at the research reactor FRM II of the Heinz Maier‐Leibnitz Zentrum in Garching near Munich has been recently upgraded. The KWS‐1 instrument was updated, from its active collimation apertures to the detector cabling. Most of the parts of the instrument were installed for the first time, including a broadband polarizer, a large‐cross‐section radio‐frequency spin flipper, a chopper and neutron lense… Show more

“…SANS and VSANS experiments were carried out at, respectively, the KWS‐1 and KWS‐3 diffractometers operated by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) at the Heinz Maier‐Leibnitz Zentrum in Garching, Germany. Four configurations were used at KWS‐1, namely the sample‐to‐detector distances of 1.3, 2, 8, and 20 m, the collimation length of 8 and 20 m, and wavelength of 7 Å (Δ λ/λ = 10%).…”

“…Hydrogels were filled into rectangular quartz cells with path length of 1 or 2 mm. Plexiglas was used as a secondary standard to calibrate the scattering intensity in absolute units at KWS‐1 and the direct beam method was used at KWS‐3 . The data correction and calibration were performed using the software QtiKWS .…”

“…Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the nanocomposite systems in the dried and in the hydrogel states were performed on the SANS diffractometer KWS-1 at JCNS in Garching [16]. The scattering patterns were recorded in the range of the scattering vector Q between 0.0017 and 0.22 Å À1 using a neutron wavelength of 4.7 Å (±5%).…”
