KTP Laser Excision of a Soft Palate Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report

Abstract: Squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate is an infrequently seen tumor of the oral cavity. The use of the KTP laser in the treatment of a 52-year-old man with a T2N0M0 soft palate carcinoma is reported. The natural history and treatment of this entity is reviewed. The application of tumor thickness as related to therapy of the neck and prognosis is commented on. Use of the KTP laser for resection of oral cavity lesions is felt to be a technological improvement beneficial to both patients and practitioners.

“…KTP laser light also has been used surgically after coupling to a bare fiber in both the contact mode and noncontact mode with reported clinical effectiveness in controlling bleeding disorders as well as tongue and soft palate cancer resections in addition to laryngeal cancer treatment [21,22]. KTP laser fiberoptics recently were tested for interstitial treatment of transplanted human squamous-cell tumors after injection of the anthrapyrazole CI-941 [9,10].…”

“…The potassium‐titanyl‐phosphate (KTP532) laser has been reported to be beneficial especially for the treatment of less advanced lesions although the neodymium yttrium‐aluminum‐garnet (Nd:YAG) infrared laser has a much wider clinical use in cancer therapy. Sheridan and Zieske 22 . reported successful treatment of a 4‐mm thick T2N0M0 soft palate SCCA with the KTP laser under local anesthesia.…”

“…Interstitial laser therapy (ILT) delivered via submillimeter fiberoptics is a less invasive method to produce localized hyperthermia focused in the treatment site. KTP-532 and Nd:YAG lasers are currently used clinically for ILT in a number of human malignancies [13][14].…”
