Kristallstruktur der stabilen Modifikation von SeCl4 / Crystal Structure of the Stable Modification of SeCl4

Abstract: Abstract Single crystals of the stable modification of selenium tetrachloride (α-SeCl4) were grown by sublimation, and the crystal structure was determined. As that of metastable β-SeCl4 it contains tetrameric cubane-like molecules Se4Cl4, but with different point symmetry and in positions which correspond to those of the atoms of the β-tungsten structure type.

“…The bond distance in SeCl2 is indistinguishable from the terminal Se-Cl bond distances in the SeCU tetramer [2,4], but significantly shorter than in crystalline Se2Cl2 where the mean Se-Cl bond distance is 2.204 Ä [3]. At the same time the valence angle in SeCh is significantly smaller than the valence angle at Se in Se2Cl2, < SeSeCl = 104.3° (mean value).…”

“…On evaporation it dissociates partly if not completely to Se(^) and SeCl2(g). SeCU forms cubane-like tetramers in the solid phase [2,4]. The melting point (in a closed system) is about 306 °C.…”

“…The Se–Cl distances of the terminating SeCl 2 units [214.2(2)–217.2(2) pm] are in accordance with the corresponding bond lengths in the PdCl 2 (SeCl 2 ) 2 molecule [213.1(8)–216.2(8) pm]7 and the [Rh 2 Cl 6 (SeCl 2 ) 4 ] complex [214.8(10)–215.6(10) pm] 11. A μ‐η Se ‐[SeCl] – ligand was not known so far; however, the Se–Cl interatomic distance of 216.1(3) pm is within the range found in SeCl 4 [214.6(5)–217.4(7) pm] 16…”

“…From powder diffraction data, Kniep et al concluded that the structure of crystalline SC1 4 [17] may be analogous to that of cubic a-SeCl 4 [20] which forms tetrameric molecules with chloride anions bridging SeCl 3 + cations in a cubane-like Se 4 Cl 16 cluster with the cations having an exact C 3v symmetry. However, the Raman spectrum of solid SeCl 4 (Fig.…”
