Dictionaries are increasingly integrated into other tools designed to assist the reading, writing and translation of texts. Write Assistant is a newly developed tool aimed at assisting people writing in a second language. It feeds on big data taken in from corpora and digital dictionaries. The paper discusses the philosophy behind the tool, the techniques applied, its empirical basis and functionality, as well as the extent to which it helps its users. It shows how the tool makes it possible to shorten and even skip some phases in the traditional information-search process and allows its user to maintain the focus on the message to be written without the need to consult external information resources. The paper shows how the underpinning technology gives birth to a new type of dictionary that is context-aware and provides a more personalised user service. But it also indicates that future dictionaries need to be conceptionally adapted to the specific tool in order to optimize the service. All this poses new challenges to lexicography. Write Assistant is 'n nuut ontwikkelde hulpmiddel wat gerig is daarop om mense wat in 'n tweede taal skryf te assisteer. Dit is gebaseer op groot data wat verkry is uit korpora en digitale woordeboeke. In hierdie artikel word die filosofie agter die hulpmiddel, die tegnieke wat toegepas word, die empiriese basis en die funksionaliteit daarvan bespreek, sowel as die mate waartoe dit die gebruikers daarvan help. Daar word aangetoon hoe die hulpmiddel dit moontlik maak om sommige fases in die funksionele inligtingsoektogproses te verkort en selfs te weg te laat, en hoe dit die gebruiker toelaat om fokus op die boodskap wat geskryf moet word, te behou sonder dat dit nodig is om eksterne inligtingsbronne te raadpleeg. Resumen: La oferta lexicográfica ha cambiado substancialmente desde hace algunos años, pero todavía presenta algunas carencias en cuanto a la inclusión de información sobre combinatoria léxica. Algunos autores consideran que esta información forma parte del significado de un lexema y, en consecuencia, debería estar incluida en su descripción lexicográfica. Dado que compartimos esta opinión, hemos decidido examinar el contenido de algunos diccionarios monolingües, como el Oxford English Dictionary (1994), Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (1995) y Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary (1993). El análisis se centrará en la búsqueda de colocaciones formadas con un verbo light como make, have, take y do, seguido de un sustantivo. Palabras clave: lexicografía, colocación, diccionarios, verbos soporte Abstract: Though the lexicographic panorama has changed in the last few years, it still lacks some information about lexical combinations. Some authors are of the opinion that this information is part of the lexeme's meaning and, consequently, should be included in its lexicographic description. As we share this opinion, we have decided to examine some of the English dictionaries, such as the Oxford English Dictionary (1994), Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (1995) and Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary (1993). In this article an Afrikaans collocation and phrase dictionary for mother-tongue speakers (primary target group) as well as advanced learners (secondary target group) is discussed. The position which such a dictionary occupies among other dictionary types is pointed out. A motivation is also given for the inclusion of idioms and other fixed phrases in the proposed dictionary. The three key approaches with regard to the interpretation of the term collocation are examined, i.e. the text-oriented approach of Halliday and Hasan (1976), the statistically-oriented approach of Sinclair (Collins Cobuild) and the significance-oriented approach of Hausmann (1984). The arguments in this article favour Benson et al.’s (1986) implementation of the significance-oriented approach. Statistical evidence could be used to examine the usage frequency of collocations and phrases. The advantages and/or disadvantages of these approaches are considered. Three types of words and their treatment in the dictionary are discussed: those which have a very wide range of combination, those which have selectional restrictions imposed by general semantic features, and those of which the range of combination is restricted by certain other words. It is argued that only the last two types should be included in this dictionary. As one of the target groups is unsophisticated learners with a limited grammatical background, the ideal would be to enter lexical collocations both at their bases and at the collocators. To save space however, more information such as examples could then be provided at the bases only. Grammatical collocations should be entered at the bases, i.e. nouns, verbs and adjectives. The division of the dictionary articles into two components to meet the needs of both intended target groups, is discussed. 
Die struktuur van 'n Afrikaanse kollokasie- en frasewoordeboekIn hierdie artikel word 'n Afrikaanse kollokasie- en frasewoordeboek vir sowel moedertaalsprekers (primêre teikengroep) as gevorderde aanleerders (sekondêre teikengroep) beskryf. Die plek wat so 'n woordeboek inneem naas ander woordeboektipes word uitgewys. 'n Motivering word ook gegee vir die insluiting van idiome en ander vaste uitdrukkings in die voorgestelde woordeboek. Die drie hoofbenaderings met betrekking tot die interpretasie van die term kollokasie word ondersoek, d.i. die teks-georiënteerde benadering van Halliday en Hasan (1976), die statisties-georiënteerde benadering van Sinclair (Collins Cobuild) en die betekenis-georiënteerde benadering van Hausmann (1984).
