Knowledge of preschool teachers in the prefecture of Attica of early childhood oral health. Association with their demographic and personal characteristics

Abstract: Based on the results of this study, there was a lack of knowledge among preschool teachers in significant OH issues for that age. Moreover, limitations in implementing OH educational programmes at preschools were attributed mainly to lack of self-confidence in relevant knowledge. Nevertheless, participants acknowledged the significance of OH and were willing to participate in relevant teacher training.

“…Preschool children may be less likely to receive mental health intervention and correct eye knowledge from preschool teachers and with the wrong transformation of knowledge from teacher to children. Our research found that scores of child health knowledge of female preschool teachers were lower than male preschool teachers, which was different from the results without gender difference in other health knowledge scores or awareness of other preschool teachers, 31,35,36,38,45,46 but was similar to the results of a study in Greece regarding health knowledge of infant diabetes. 47 This finding suggests that male teachers may possess greater health knowledge in the group of preschool teachers, and it may also be due to the fact that male preschool teachers in China act as physical education teachers or health education personnel in kindergartens, and as a result, their health knowledge scores are higher.…”

In Greece, India, and Nigeria, the schoolteachers’ inadequate knowledge about oral health was significantly associated with their willingness to learn about oral health and involved themselves in its teaching [ 56 , 57 , 58 ].…”

“…In early years, children adopt healthy habits and behaviors more easily and the role of the family and the preschool teachers is important in the development of healthy attitudes and promotion of oral health. In Greece, mothers’ and preschool teachers’ knowledge on children's oral health issues has been found poor . Consequently, it is obvious that preschool children in Greece should have early dental intervention, and this is imperative for both healthy children and children with NDD.…”
