Objectives Bisphosphonates (BPs) are used for treatment of various benign and malignant medical conditions. Medications-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a very serious complication of prolonged therapy with BPs. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge among dental professionals in Saudi Arabia regarding MRONJ. Materials and Methods This was a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire comprising close-ended questions about BPs and MRONJ was sent to a convenience sample of dentists in Saudi Arabia.Statistical Analysis SPSS software was used for data analysis. Chi-square test was used to compare between the groups. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results A total of 607 dentists participated in this survey. Overall, the respondents showed insufficient level of knowledge regarding BPORNJ, with only 70% of the respondents had heard about BPORNJ, and less than 50% recognized the risk factors and clinical features of the disease. Additionally, while two-thirds of the respondents recognized the importance of taking BPs history, the majority did not know the correct treatment approach. Respondents with higher degrees (specialists) showed far better knowledge than general dentists. Conclusion The knowledge regarding BPs therapy and its complications among Saudi dentists is unsatisfactory. Hence, interventions are highly required to improve dentists’ knowledge regarding BPs and MRONJ.

Bisphosphonate-associated Osteonecrosis of the Jaws: a Survey of the Level of Knowledge of Dentists about the Risks of Bisphosphonate Therapy

Introduction: Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws (BAONJ) is a side effect of treatment with bisphosphonate (BP). Reports of this complication have increased recently. Aim: To evaluate the level of knowledge of dentists from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, about possible complications of bisphosphonate therapy of patients in dental practice. Materials and methods: Three hundred and twenty-three dental practitioners from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, took part in an anonymous survey containing 25 questions, designed to evaluate the knowledge of dentists about the complications of BP therapy. Results: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the best knowledge about the indications and side effects of BP therapy, while dentists with a specialty in Pediatric Dentistry and General Dentistry have insufficient knowledge. Of the respondents, 17.03% are absolutely uninformed about BP and their side effects, and 1/2 declare that they have never had a patient with complications from BP therapy in their practice, probably due to a lack of awareness of the problem. Approximately half of the dentists we surveyed agree to carry out prophylactic examinations of patients receiving BP and know what the prophylactic examination includes. Only 15.48% of the respondents have correctly responded that in order to be treated as clinically healthy, patients should have stopped taking BP for more than 10 years. Conclusion: With the exception of specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, dental practitioners in Plovdiv and the region are poorly informed about the complications associated with BP therapy. Therefore, efforts must be made to make these dentists better informed about BAONJ, especially about the methods and means of preventing this condition.

Objective: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious condition affecting the quality of life of patients taking antiresorptive and anti-angiogenic drugs. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate dentists' awareness of MRONJ. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to dentists. The questionnaire contained 20 questions on the demographic data of the participants and their awareness of MRONJ and the complications of antiresorptive or anti-angiogenic drugs. The responses were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test and Fisher's exact test.Results: In total, 141 dentists participated in the survey. Of these, 42.6% did not know about MRONJ. There was a statistically significant difference between specialist dentists and general dentists on the questions about the complications, effects, and usage of antiresorptive and anti-angiogenic drugs on necrosis formation (p<0.05). Dentists with less experience (seven years'<) were more knowledgeable about MRONJ (86.7%); compared to those with more than seven years' clinical experience.Conclusions: This study showed that the knowledge level of dentists regarding the side effects of antiresorptive and anti-angiogenic medications is weak. Overall, MRONJ awareness among general dentists was poor.
