Knowledge management and intellectual capital in knowledge-based organisations: a review and theoretical perspectives

Abstract: Purpose This paper provides a conceptual discussion of the bidirectional relationship between knowledge management (KM) and intellectual capital (IC) in a specific subset of knowledge-based organisations, i.e. professional sport organisations. Through the review and conceptual discussion of two relevant research themes, i.e. KM strategies for IC value creation and IC codification, this paper aims to highlight research gaps useful to… Show more

“…In the competitive and uncertain environment of contemporary business, it is imperative for firms to make most effective use of their available resources, both tangible and intangible (Barney, 2001). Effective KM, as a sub-set of dynamic capabilities (see Nielsen, 2006; Pereira et al , 2019; Pérez-Bustamante, 1999; Garcia-Perez et al ., 2020), is a crucial attribute of successful HGFs, as high productivity and related rapid firm growth can be generated via investment in-, development of- and effective use of intangible assets (Bamel and Bamel, 2018; Dove, 1999). Indeed, KM is crucial as intangible assets such as training investments and discovery, but also for the protection of intellectual property (Augier and Teece, 2009; Harreld et al , 2007).…”

“…It has been approached from several theoretical perspectives and angles (Gröjer, 2001; Mouritsen et al , 2001; Giacosa et al , 2017), leading to a plethora of proposed concepts, methods and tools (Mouritsen et al , 2001; Chaminade and Roberts, 2003). Although it cannot be revealed accurately in companies' financial statements, it reflects their real value and is based on the knowledge owned and used by them (Nahapiet and Ghoshal, 1998; Ferraris et al , 2018; Usai et al , 2018; Garcia-Perez et al , 2020). IC has been proposed as one of the most relevant drivers of growth and key capital in entrepreneurial development over time (Halberstadt et al , 2019).…”

“…In simple words, the bootstrapping process is used to see if there is a significant relationship between the observed variables. The criteria for accepting or rejecting the hypothesis are that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected when the t-statistic shows > 1.96, and to reject or accept the hypothesis using a probability value, HA will be accepted if the p-value <0.05 [16].…”
