Knowledge gained by pediatric residents after neonatal resuscitation program courses

Abstract: The knowledge gained by pediatric residents participating in the NRP course was very high, but was only partially retained over time. In particular, it was different among the four steps of neonatal resuscitation suggesting further studies on teaching resuscitation.

“…Our study revealed that health workers trained in NRP courses increased their knowledge and skills, and our results were in accordance with other studies in the same field (13)(14)(15) . But we could not find any study evaluating pre-test, and post-test results based on the participant's occupations.…”

“…Trevisanuto et al showed that participants had lower rate of success 6 months after the course, when compared to post-test results (14) . This information is adapted to our program with update trainings every third year following the course since 2004. coNclusIoNs 1.…”

“…Telemedicine-supported education can be used to complete standard Neonatal Resuscitation Program training and has been reported to produce comparable gains in knowledge and skills relative to in-person training (99). While Neonatal Resuscitation Program is a highly reliable method to gain initial competency in delivery room resuscitation, knowledge and technical competency rates decline within 6 mo if the skills are not used (100). Furthermore, delivery volumes are low in small hospitals, and the need for advanced neonatal resuscitation is a rare event, occurring in less than 1% of all births.…”

“…Several studies have been devoted to the retention of skills in areas, such as anesthesia, neonatology and obstetrics. [16][17][18][19] In laparoscopic surgery, a previous study using virtual-reality simulation demonstrated that although trainees retained their acquired skills for 6 to 7 months, after an additional 12 months with no training, their skills had reverted to the pre-training level. [20][21][22] Until now, the retention of robot-assisted surgical skills has not been reported.…”
