Knowledge creation in collaboration networks: Effects of tie configuration

Abstract: This paper studies the relationship between egocentric collaboration networks and knowledge creation at the individual level. For egocentric networks we focus on the characteristics of tie strength and tie configuration, and knowledge creation is assessed by the number of citations. Using a panel of 1,042 American scientists in five disciplines and fixed effects models, we found an inverted U-shaped relationship between network average tie strength and impact, because an increase in tie strength on the one han… Show more

“…Studies have focused on frameworks and models to describe this process as well as evaluating the effectiveness of organisational frameworks at shaping project outcomes (Huang and Newell, 2003;Lander, 2016;Hunter et al, 2011;Wang, 2016;Martin--de--Castro et al, 2008). A number of models of knowledge creation have been developed (Hessels and Lente, 2008;Berker and Bharathi, 2012).…”

“…They can be composed whenever a need for knowledge sharing arises (Ayas & Zeniuk, 2001;Grant, 1996;Van den Bosch et al, 1999). In relation to the strength of tying in a network, Wang (2016) stated that an increase in tie strength initially has a positive effect on knowledge creation, while the effect turns into negative after the tie strength reaches a threshold.…”
