Knowledge creation and knowledge diffusion in space and regional innovation performance: introductory remarks

Abstract: This special issue of the Annals of Regional Science provides an up to date state of the art in understanding the complex relationship between knowledge creation, knowledge diffusion, regional innovation, and local economic performance. Research on this issue dates back to the eighties when the neoclassical approach of innovation as a manna from heaven was left aside, and contributions in the field of innovationdriven regional development were put forward. Concepts like innovative milieux, technological distri… Show more

“…Research shows that induced knowledge spillovers in certain specialized sectors, markets and countries lead to enhanced capabilities for knowledge diffusion in those environments (Boschma & Frenken, 2011;Lundvall, 2007). Capello and Varga (2013) assert that proximity-related advantages between innovating partners, as can often be found in innovation ecosystems, would contribute to the increased creation and diffusion of knowledge, and lead to enhanced innovation performance. Knowledge diffusion acts as a vital component in the development of a sustainable competitive advantage, suggesting that the diffusion of knowledge has become a critical factor to enhance the rate of innovation and remain competitive (Tang et al 2020).…”

“…If this description is accurate, dense, geographically proximate networks within a region will allow us to treat a regional economy like a structure in a firm, to a certain degree. In fact, researchers have accumulated ample evidence to suggest this, drawn from their approaches to topics ranging from 1980s’ industrial districts to today’s evolutionary economic geography (Boschma & Ter Wal, ; Capello & Varga, ; Pyke & Sengenberger, ; Russo, ). It therefore seems plausible that a region might play a critical role in assimilating and diffusing exogenous knowledge within a NSI.…”
