Knowledge‐based design of removable partial dentures using direct manipulation and critiquing

Abstract: A knowledge-based system for designing removable partial dentures is described in which graphical representations of denture components are manipulated directly by the user to build the required denture design. The arch form of individual patients may be depicted by linear movement and rotation of the icons representing teeth. The size, shape and position of many denture components are determined dynamically to conform to the shape of abutment teeth and to the juxtaposition of other elements. Expert clinical k… Show more

“…The acceptance and potential of CAL programs as distance learning aids for general dental practitioners have been reported (Long et al 1994). In common with the assessments of other dental CAL programs for dental practitioners (Hammond et al 1993; Pollard & Davenport 1994; Stephens & Grigg 1994), `Aspects of Minor Oral Surgery' has been shown to be an effective method of providing clinical information at an appropriate level for general dental practitioners. Postgraduate courses and videotapes are effective methods of updating dental practitioners (Mouatt et al 1991), but practitioners may be reluctant to attend courses regularly, and videotapes do not provide the interactivity that is a feature of some CAL programs.…”

“…Computer-assisted learning (CAL) programs are becoming more widely used in medical and dental education (Bagnall & Geissler 1988;Telford et al 1989;Hennessey et al 1990;Demirjian 1991;Hammond et al 1993). Evaluation and re®nement are essential components of the development process (Bresnitz et al 1992;Gratz et al 1994;Pollard & Davenport 1994;Long et al 1994;.…”

“…RaPiD (i?emovable Partial Denture design using artificial mtelligence) is a knowledge-based system (KBS) being developed both as an educational tool for training in partial denture design and as a clinical decision support tool to enhance dentists' design expertise in practice. The rationale for this system and the development of the prototype have been reported previously (Hammond, Davenport & Potts, 1993). The system's further development and its early formative evaluation have been described by , and an explanation of the chosen approach to its implementation has been given by Hammond, Davenport & Eitzpatrick (1993).…”

“…14 There are expert systems available also for designing removable partial dentures. [15][16][17] A decision support system, TxDENT, is an expert system operating on personal computers to guide clinicians without radiographs or other diagnostic aids through a systematic oral examination to record a database of clinical findings and to recommend treatment and associated fees. 18 (The program can be obtained for inspection free of charge at www.dentistry.ubc.ca/research/txdent/txdent.htm.)…”
