Background: Population explosion is a major problem in developing country like India. Contraception is important for the health of the nation. Hence the present study aimed at elucidating knowledge of the couples towards contraception. Methods: A cross - sectional study was conducted during February 2013-January 2014 among the couples residing in the field practice study areas. A semi-structured questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge towards various methods of family planning was administered to 406 couples of the study area. Results: It has been observed that female scored higher than males, however there was no statistically significant difference between the overall knowledge scores (18.67±7.798 vs. 18.41±7.177). In general, the highest knowledge was obtained in the domain of permanent contraception followed by temporary methods like condom and IUDs. The least knowledge scores were obtained in the domain of emergency contraceptives and natural methods of contraception. Urban population’s over all mean knowledge scores was 22.60±6.673 compared with rural population 14.48±5.898 and was statistically significant (p=0.036). However, the marked difference in knowledge scores was obtained in the context of gender and place of residence. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that the average knowledge among males and females and in urban and rural area, but some knowledge gaps on certain specific aspects still remained which needs to be addressed to improve the quality of life of people.

Introduction:Condoms safeguard against unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among all age groups. The HIV transmission rate increases when condoms are not used properly. The purpose of this study was to determine knowledge of condom use amongst high school students. A cross-sectional study was conducted on high school students to assess their knowledge of condom use. A total of 346 eligible learners from various high schools in Shamavunga circuit of Limpopo were selected from grades 10-12 through systematic random sampling. Material and methods:Grade 12 students were comprised the majority of participants (37.3%, n = 129), followed by grade 11 at 35% and grade 10 at 27.7%. The group included more females than males.Results: A total of 307 (88.7%) students indicated that they had knowledge about the protection that condoms provide against HIV and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), STIs, and pregnancy, whereas 39 (11.3%) students indicated insufficient knowledge. Furthermore, 91.3% of the learners reported that condoms cannot be used repeatedly, and 52% knew that condoms are available at no cost from clinics and hospital. Conclusions:The study found knowledge of condom use among high school students was evident, although some knowledge deficiencies were also noted including unrolling a condom before putting on the penis and using a condom with oil-based lubricant. Therefore, specific educational programmes such as life orientation are recommended to increase knowledge. Furthermore, high school students should be encouraged to make use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Background. Unsafe sexual behavior among adolescents still represents a public health challenge. To have safe sex, effective condom utilization is needed. Condom use remains relatively low among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. Even though adolescents have good knowledge about condom use, they are still engaged in risky sexual behavior. Objective. To assess condom use and attitude toward condom use among college students in southwest Ethiopia. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 453 students at Mizan-Aman Polytechnic College in southwest Ethiopia. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire. The collected data were entered using EpiData version 4.2.0.0 and analyzed using SPSS version 20 statistical software. Binary logistic regression was computed. Independent variables with a p value of less than 0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression model were considered significant. Results. Of the 453, 180 were sexually active. Among those sexually active, 119 (66.1%) used condoms in their last sexual intercourse. The proportion of positive attitude toward condom use was 53.4%, and the mean attitude score for condom use was 28.6 (±9.99 SD) ranging from 10 to 50. The study also found that being male (AOR=1.77, 95% CI [1.19-2.65]), rural resident (AOR=2.20, 95% CI [1.47-3.30]), ever had sex (AOR=1.87, 95% CI [1.23-2.85]), and knowledge of STIs (AOR=1.66, 95% CI [1.10-2.51]) were factors associated with a positive attitude toward condom use. Conclusion. The proportion of positive attitude toward condom use among college students in Ethiopia was low. The study also found that being male, rural resident, ever had sex, and knowledge of STIs were factors associated with a positive attitude toward condom use. Therefore, strengthening information, education, and communication (IEC) on condom self-efficacy; providing condoms on campuses; and imparting education about sexually transmitted infections for young adults are central for improving condom use and attitudes toward condom use. Besides, inculcating sexual and reproductive health in the educational curriculum plays paramount importance.
