BackgroundHIV-positive people can spread the virus through unprotected sex; however, HIV can be avoided if populations are educated about the risks. In underdeveloped nations, evidence suggests that the ABC method for HIV prevention is quite effective. As a result, the goal of this study was to determine the magnitude of HIV prevention behavior among adults in the Majang zone of Southwest Ethiopia, as well as the factors that influence it.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was carried out from March 1st to May 31st, 2019. The data were collected through a face-to-face interview using a modified validated questionnaire among systematically selected study participants. The collected data were coded and entered using Epidata manager version 4.0.2.101 and analyzed using SPSS version 21. A logistic regression analysis was computed to determine the association using crude and adjusted odds ratios at 95% confidence intervals. The level of significance was declared at a p-value less than 0.05.ResultsOf the 772 adults interviewed, the proportion of adults who had good HIV preventive behavior was 51.8%, 95% CI [48.3–55.3%]. Two hundred forty (31.9%) were used abstinence as a type of HIV preventive behavior followed by being faithful (16.1%) and consistent condom use (7.3%). The study also found that respondents with the age group ≥27 years old (AOR = 1.56, 95% CI [1.3–3.12]), marital status (being married (AOR = 6.30, 95% CI [4.48–11.4]), and divorced/widowed (AOR = 5.50, 95% CI [2.60–12.4]) and having good knowledge of HIV prevention methods (AOR = 2.18, 95% CI [1.71–4.00]) were the factors associated with good HIV preventive behavior.Conclusion and RecommendationIn the study area, overall HIV prevention behavior was average. The characteristics linked with successful HIV prevention behavior among adults in the Majang community included increasing age, being married or divorced/widowed, and having a solid understanding of HIV prevention approaches. As a result, policy-level and multi-sectorial intervention approaches from all stakeholders are necessary to develop short- and long-term strategies to address the problem and improve the community’s quality of life.

Background Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are widely reported in pregnant women in Africa and can cause significant maternal and perinatal morbidity. The availability of epidemiologic data on STIs and their associated factors in pregnant women is critical to developing effective prevention strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with sexually transmitted infection-associated syndromes among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics at selected public health facilities in southwest Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out with 303 pregnant women who attended ANC between November 1 and 30, 2018. The consecutive sampling technique was employed until the required sample size was reached. The data were collected using a structured and pre-tested questionnaire. Bi-variable and multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify independent variables associated with the outcome of interest. The level of significance was declared at a p-value < 0.05. Results Of the 303 respondents surveyed, STI-associated syndromes had a prevalence of 19.1% (95% CI: 14.7%–23.5%). Nearly one-tenth (8.9%) of the respondents had vaginal discharge syndrome followed by lower abdominal or pelvic pain (7.6%). The study also found that being unmarried (AOR = 5.61, 95% CI [2.34–9.36]), not formally educated (AOR = 2.24, 95% CI [1.58–3.86]), having multiple sexual partners in the past 3 months (AOR = 3.93, 95% CI [1.44–5.23]), history of spontaneous abortion (AOR = 4.48, 95% CI [2.21–7.72]), and history of STI (AOR = 3.76, 95% CI [2.24–6.46]) were the factors associated with STI-associated syndromes. Conclusion The prevalence of STI-associated syndromes among respondents was 19.1%. The study found that being unmarried, not formally educated, having multiple sexual partners, history of spontaneous abortion, and history of STI were largely accountable for the occurrence of STI-associated syndromes in the study sample. Therefore, in addition to the one-time assessment of HIV and syphilis at the first ANC visit, there is a need to emphasize the syndromic approach diagnosis of STIs among pregnant women during each ANC visit to reduce and ultimately prevent both vertical and horizontal transmissions of STIs.

Background. Early age at first sexual practice is a public health issue and now common around the world especially in the developing countries. The development of effective strategies to reduce the adverse consequences of early sexual initiation becomes real when sufficient data is available. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing the prevalence and factors associated to early sexual initiation among college students in southwest Ethiopia. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 453 college students in southwest Ethiopia from April to May 2018. A two-stage stratified sampling technique was used to select the study participants. The data were collected using structured pretested self-administered questionnaire. The collected data were entered using Epi-Data version 4.2.0.0 and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the effect of independent variables on the outcome variable. Significance was declared at p < 0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results. The proportion of early sexual initiation among college students was 17.9%, 95% CI (14.4%-24.4%). The mean age of sexual intercourse was 17.6 (±2 SD) years. Nearly three-fourths (73.4%) of the respondent’s reason for early sexual intercourse was falling in love. More than half (62.2%) of the respondents used a condom for their first sexual intercourse. The factors associated with early sexual initiation were being female ( AOR = 2.09 and 95% CI [1.17-2.35]), chewing khat ( AOR = 7.05 and 95% CI [3.81-13.1]), exposed to pornographic materials at age < 18 years ( AOR = 3.57 and 95% CI [1.94-6.89]), and poor knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases ( AOR = 8.69 and 95% CI [3.52-21.5]). Conclusion. The prevalence of early sexual initiation among college students was alarmingly high. This may be associated with a huge burden of poor sexual and reproductive health. Therefore, creating awareness of the factors and related negative sexual and reproductive health effect of early sexual initiation for young peoples through the use of mass media (television and radio), school teachers, and parents plays a paramount importance.
