Introduction: Dental trauma care emergency is very important issue, especially in cases of avulsion and it is crucial for the prognosis. A preventive-educational approach had not been effective and there are many failures in handling dental trauma, mainly by lack of knowledge by health professionals, teachers and lay people. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of 89 teachers about dental trauma. Material and methods: A questionnaire divided into three parts containing questions about the emergency procedures in cases of dental trauma was applied. Results: Only 13% of teachers would replant the tooth in the socket, and only 7% said they would put the tooth in some liquid and 58% would store in a piece of paper, cloth or clean container. In relation to replantation, 75% reported that they would hold the tooth by the crown, 79% reported that first they would refer to the dentist, and 80% thought that the treatment had to be immediate. With regard to tooth preparation, 46% would keep it in saline, 24% in water, and only 11% in milk. Concerning to the avulsed tooth, only 15% correctly answered that they would replant the avulsed tooth and then referred to the dentist. Conclusion: It was concluded that the knowledge of teachers must be improved by educational and preventive campaigns on management of traumatized teeth.

ÖZETAmaç: Dentoalveolar yaralanmalar çocuklar ve adölesanlarda sıklıkla rastladığımız, dişler ve çevre dokularını etkileyen, bireyde psikososyal problemler yaratabilen ve tedavi gereksinimine bağlı ekonomik sıkıntıları beraberinde getiren kompleks bir durumdur. Bu çalışma, travmatik dental yaralanmalar karşısında ebeveynlerin bilgisini ve ilk müdahaleye yönelik yaklaşımlarını değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Yöntem: Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Pedodonti Anabilim Dalı tarafından hazırlanan anket, bölümümüze başvuran 550 hastanın ebeveynine uygulanmıştır. İncelemeler sonucunda eksiksiz olarak doldurulmuş 518 anket değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Bulgular: Ebeveynlerden sadece % 23,5'i daha önce diş yaralanmaları hakkında bilgilendirildiklerini söylemektedir. Bilgi kaynakları arasında diş hekimi, aile hekimi ve internet önde gelmektedir. Ebeveynlerden % 81,8'i bu yaralanmaların acil bir durum olduğunu düşünmektedir; fakat yalnızca % 16,2'si bu konuda durumu kontrol edebilecek bilgi düzeyine sahip olduğunu bildirmiştir. Ebeveynlerin sadece %7,4'ü yerinden çıkmış bir dişi tekrar yerine koyabileceğini bildirmiştir. Dişi yerine yerleştirmeden önce temizliği ile ilgili olarak ebeveynlerin %41,3'ünün bir fikri bulunmamaktadır. Dişin avülse olması halinde ebeveynlerin ilk başvurduğu yerler arasında % 52 ile ağız diş sağlığı merkezleri ilk sırada yer almaktadır. Sağlık kuruluşlarına başvurma süreleriyle ilgili olarak ebeveynlerin %40'ı ilk 30dk.'da gidilmesi gerektiğini düşünmektedir. Yerinden çıkmış dişi diş hekimine götürürken nasıl muhafaza edilmesiyle ilgili ebeveynlerin %43,6'sının herhangi bir fikri bulunmamaktadır. Sonuç: Ebeveynlerin travmatik diş yaralanmaları ile ilgili olarak bilgi seviyelerinin yeterli düzeyde olmadığı gözlenmiştir. Bu konuda topluma daha çok ulaşılabilecek okul, hastane gibi kurumlarda bilgilendirmenin artırılması gerekmektedir. Abstract: This study reveals that there is a lack of awareness among the mothers regarding the emergency management of dental trauma. This warrants the need of an effective communication between dental professionals and mothers for better handling of dental emergencies.
