This article addresses ecosystem service perceptions in the case of pond fish-farming systems in Brazil, France and Indonesia. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment vision suggests a more integrated reflection on environmental policies with greater adaptability to local knowledge and the development of social learning processes, which tend to promote more sustainable changes in behavior and practice than do sanctions. This study considers a part of the identification of ecosystem services. It shows that perceptions differ with the context, and found few differences depending on the type of stakeholders (fish farmers and other stakeholders). From a methodological viewpoint, this paper opens up new prospects for valuing ecosystem services through a perception study.

RESUMO:Os Pagamentos por Serviços Ambientais (PSA) se inserem num contexto global em que a economia de mercado não pode mais desconsiderar os recursos e usos da natureza, tendo que considerá-la como um de seus componentes, a fim de que os seres humanos possam exercer suas atividades de forma não nociva aos ecossistemas. Nesse sentido, práticas de incentivo que estimulem ou reforcem atitudes conservacionistas são essenciais. Para se considerar os PSA efetivos, tem-se que verificar uma série de fatores, tais como os custos de transação e oportunidade, o efeito da permanência, do vazamento e da adicionalidade, que este trabalho procurou aplicar na análise de seis programas de PSA existentes na Região Sul do Brasil voltados à conservação de recursos hídri-cos. Os padrões observados foram a dificuldade em lidar com custos de transação e oportunidade, bem como o efeito da falta de permanência. Porém, os programas de PSA incentivaram uma mudança de comportamento por parte dos proprietários fornecedores de serviços ambientais, estimulando a conservação da água. Desse modo, possíveis programas de PSA a serem implementados na APA do Banhado Grande, sul do Brasil, representam uma forma de promover a conservação de áreas úmidas, que prestam importantes serviços ambientais, com o intuito de minimizar os conflitos entre meio ambiente e atividades humanas, como a rizicultura.Palavras-chave: serviços ecossistêmicos; economia ecológica; reflorestamento; matas ciliares.ABSTRACT: Payments for Environmental Services (PES) are part of a global context in which the market economy can no longer ignore nature's resources and how it is used, having to consider it as one of its components, so that human beings can exercise their activities in a way that is not harmful to the ecosystems. In this sense, it is essential to incentive practices that strengthen conservative attitudes. To consider the actual PES, we have to check a number of factors, such as: transaction costs and opportunity, the effects of permanence, leakage and additionality; which this paper sought to apply by analyzing six PES programs aiming the conservation of water resources in Southern Brazil. ABSTRACT. An important aspect of sustainability is to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem functioning while improving human well-being. For this, the ecosystem service (ES) approach has the potential to bridge the still existing gap between ecological management and social development, especially by focusing on trade-offs and synergies between ES and between their beneficiaries. Several frameworks have been proposed to account for trade-offs and synergies between ES, and between ES and other components of socialecological systems. However, to date, insufficient explicit attention has been paid to the three facets encompassed in the ES concept, namely potential supply, demand, and use, leading to incomplete descriptions of ES interactions. We expand on previous frameworks by proposing a new influence network framework (INF) based on an explicit consideration of influence relationships between these three ES facets, biodiversity, and external driving variables. We tested its ability to provide a comprehensive view of complex socialecological interactions around ES through a consultative process focused on environmental management in the French Alps. We synthetized the interactions mentioned during this consultative process and grouped variables according to their overall propensity to influence or be influenced by the system. The resulting directed sequence of influences distinguished between: (1) mostly influential variables (dynamic social variables and ecological state variables), (2) target variables (provisioning and cultural services), and (3) mostly impacted variables (regulating services and biodiversity parameters). We discussed possible reasons for the discrepancies between actual and perceived influences and proposed options to overcome them. We demonstrated that the INF holds the potential to deliver collective assessments of ES relations by: (1) including ecological as well as social aspects, (2) providing opportunities for colearning processes between stakeholder groups, and (3) supporting communication about complex social-ecological systems and consequences for environmental management.
