Kisspeptin and attributes of infertile males and females: A cross‐sectional study in a subset of Pakistani population

Abstract: Kisspeptin, a peptide hormone, plays a pivotal role in fertility and neuroendocrine regulation of hypothalamo–pituitary–gonadal axis. Increased kisspeptin and reproductive hormones are responsible for fertility in male and females. This study aimed to explore the role of kisspeptin on hypothalamo–pituitary–gonadal axis by comparing the levels of kisspeptin in fertile and infertile subjects and identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of KISS1 gene in exon 2 and exon 3 of infertile male and female coh… Show more

“…These forms all share a common C-terminal decapeptide (KP10), which is required for binding with its receptor KISS1R (also known as GPR54) [12]. Given its vital functions, KISS1 gene SNPs were studied in precocious puberty, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and male infertility in different clinical and geographical settings [13][14][15]. To the best of our knowledge, no study was conducted, at least in Iraq, to examine the role of KISS1 gene SNPs in idiopathic male infertility.…”

“…Activating and inactivating mutations in KISS1 or KISS1R genes cause pubertal failure and precocious puberty in children [15][16][17]. Concentrations of hypothalamic KP were causally associated with GnRH activation and reproductive maturation in humans [9,[18][19][20][21]. Prevalence of CPP has been predicted to be 0.2% in general population [22], and interestingly, females are at least 10 times more likely to develop premature puberty than males [6,23].…”

“…Furthermore, we found a decrease in the level of KISS in males with CF compared with healthy males. In men, circulating KISS levels change in relation to fertility status, being significantly higher in fertile men than in infertile men 35 . The primary role of hypothalamic KISS is the regulation of gonadotropin releasing hormone secretion from neurons.…”
