Segregation of antimony trioxide (ATO) from back-coated textiles was studied for two types of textile samples: A (ATO-Hexabromocyclododecane) and B (ATO-Decabromodiphenyl ether). Samples A was found to lose 5.3, 12, 28 and 39 %wt:wt of the amount of ATO originally present due to thermal ageing and UV exposure, respectively. Thermal ageing was performed at 25, 60 and 90 °C compared to 11.0, 17.3, 26.0 and 20.4 % wt:wt of ATO for sample B. The release follows first order kinetics with rate constants of 7.59×10 -3 , 1.89×10 -2 , 4.80×10 -2 and 2.60×10 -2 day -1 , respectively, for type A and 9.20×10 -3 , 2.06×10 -2 , 4.10×10 -2 and 3.83×10 -2 day -1 for type B aged at 25, 60, 90 °C and UV exposure, respectively. Migration of ATO from the backcoated textile into simulated biological fluids was also studied for different type of samples under different ageing conditions using Head-over-Heels and contact blotting tests. The presence of biological fluids enhances the migration of ATO.

Among anthropogenic chemicals, flame retardants have attracted mounting environmental concerns. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been conducted worldwide to investigate flame-retardant sources, environmental distribution, wildlife and human exposure, and toxicity. Data generated have demonstrated that some flame-retardant substances such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic to exposed organisms. However, comparatively much less attention has been paid to the mechanisms and products of environmental transformation of flame retardants. This lack of information undermines our understanding of the environmental behavior and fate of flame retardants, as well as the associated risks to environmental and human health. Photochemical and microbial transformation of flame retardants in various matrices and environmental compartments can elevate the toxicological significance of flame retardant exposure, via the formation of, for example, lesser halogenated but more bioaccumulative degradation products and toxic radicals. Such pathways raise concerns related to the environmental safety of some alternative flame retardants that are presumably safe and used to replace PBDEs. To fully assess the environmental risks, more research is needed to investigate the environmental transformation potential of emerging flame retardants including polymeric flame retardants. Enhanced analytical efforts are needed to better characterize transformation products and transient radicals. Additional mesocosm and field studies are needed to elucidate transformation kinetics and consequences under environmentally relevant conditions.

Effects of ageing on the fire behaviour of flame-retarded polymers: a review

International audienceThe influence of environmental ageing on the reaction to fire of flame-retarded polymers is reviewed. Six types of stimuli have been identified as the most relevant parameters inducing fire behaviour modification: temperature, moisture, UV radiation, ionizing radiation, chemical solvent and physical stress. This review provides a state of the art and current comprehension of the effects of ageing on flame retardancy of polymers. Various physical and chemical phenomena lead to ageing and deterioration (or sometimes improvement) of the flame retardancy of polymers: release of additives (not only flame retardants) through thermal migration, solubilization, abrasion, etc., chemical degradation of the flame-retardant system, and chemical or physical modification of the polymer structure (chain scission, crosslinking, diffusion of water, etc.). Obviously, ageing effects strongly depend on the material and the ageing scenario considered. Solutions to maintain flame-retardant efficiency in aggressive conditions are also presented
