Kinetics of the Sn(3P0) Reactions with CO2 and O2 over Wide Temperature Ranges

Abstract: Rate coefficients for the title reactions have been measured by the high-temperature fast-flow reactor (HTFFR) technique. The relative concentrations of Sn ground-state atoms were monitored by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) for Sn + CO 2 f SnO + CO and by either LIF or atomic resonance absorption for the Sn + O 2 f SnO + O reaction. Results from these two diagnostic methods agree very well. We obtained, in units of cm 3 molecule -1 s -1

“…Studies of temperature-dependent rate constants for both the main group and transition metal reactions with O 2 in the gas phase have been extensive. Atmospheric scientists are interested in these reactions owing to the presence of metallic species in the atmosphere from meteor ablation , and pollution from industrial smokestacks . These reactions are also of interest in chemical vapor deposition processes. …”

“…It is well recognized that under the actual combustion conditions, tin oxidation would be kinetic-reaction controlled. Fontijn and Bajaj proposed the one-step global reaction mechanism of Sn(0) in the presence of O 2 and CO 2 (Fontijn and Bajaj, 1996). However, such mechanisms provide little insight into the details of the conversion process.…”

“…Our study mainly concentrated on the reaction mechanism and kinetics of stannic oxidation by potential oxidants (O 2 , CO 2 , HOCl, HCl, ClO, ClO 2 and NO 3 ), and the further oxidation of SnO and SnCl by HOCl and HCl. Among these oxidants, O 2 and CO 2 are considered the two main components affecting tin oxidation (Fontijn and Bajaj, 1996). The purpose of this study is to provide guidelines for experimentalists, and to enrich the kinetic database in this area.…”

“…Thus, the mechanisms of the reactions in coal combustion are important and interesting. Extensive experimental investigations on mechanisms of the reactions have been performed 1–24. However, corresponding theoretical studies are infrequent.…”
