Kinetics of the Diene Sulfur Dioxide Reaction1

Abstract: Exchange reaction between hydrogen of butanes and deuterium of deuterium bromidealuminum bromide catalyst has been studied in order to elucidate the mechanism of butane isomerization.Very little exchange reaction and no isomerization occurred when butanes were treated with deuterium bromide-aluminum bromide. In the presence of 0.1 mole per cent, of butenes, isomerization of «-butane to isobutane occurred and 82-92% of the deuterium was exchanged for hydrogen.Deuteroxyaluminum dibromide acted as a catalyst for … Show more

“…[5,[9][10][11][12] However, we are unaware of any published accounts of reactions of alcohols and bases with SO 2 gas. There are literature precedents for an organic reversible SO 2 binding and release system; Eckert and Liotta et al [18,19] were the first to show a nonionic switchable solvent system with SO 2 as the miscibility trigger based on the early work of Drake et al [19,20] Although there are literature precedents for alkyl sulfite salts of amidine and guanidines, [21] there are not, to our knowledge, any reports of the use of such mixtures as switchable solvents or as SO 2 scrubbing agents.…”

“…The elimination reaction of SO2 from the sulfolenes is stereospecific and thus presumably concerted [5]. The activation energy can thus be expected to be much lower, and this is in fact the case for isoprene sulfone where there is a difference of close to 138 kJ.…”

“…Each of the pure sulfolenes was allowed to undergo a thermal retro-cheletropic process at a specific temperature for a specified length of time. PS and BS undergo decomposition at a reasonable rate at 120 and 135 °C, respectively [23]. The pertinent processes were conducted on a 20 mL scale and compared to results conducted on a 5 mL scale.…”
