Water pollution has generated the need to develop technologies to remove industrial pollutants. Adsorption has been recognized as one of the most effective techniques for effluent remediation. In this study, parts (stem and leaves) of a problematic aquatic weed, the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), were separated to produce a bioadsorbent. The objective was to evaluate the adsorption of a cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), in an aqueous solution of the biomass from different parts of the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) plants. The materials were characterized through techniques of infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and thermogravimetric analysis, before and after the material adsorption. Water hyacinth biomasses presented adsorption capacity above 89%, and the kinetics was faster for stem biomass. The kinetic study found that the adsorption process is better described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the adjustments of the isotherm experimental data indicated that both materials are favorable for adsorption. Therefore, water hyacinth bioadsorbent represents a renewable resource with potential for effluent treatment.

Collagen-based dressings achieve excellent repair of the skin during metical cosmetology, which has received a lot of attention recently. Although great progress has been made on using biomass fiber as dressing carrier, more research is required on developing novel biomass fibers because of the limitations of (i.e., high cost and complex processing) of existing materials. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of two human-like collagen were studied by examining the Kapok fiber that was modified using alkali consisting of various amounts of the mass fraction. Results show that the alkali-modified Kapok fiber surface becomes rough with vertically arranged grooves, and the cross-section depicts the hollow cavity structure. The composition analysis of alkali modified Kapok shows that alkali dissolves part of the hemicellulose and lignin. Additionally, the surface energy rises sharply and the water contact angle changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. The adsorption amount of raw Kapok fiber is around 0.6g/g, which accounts for only one twenty-first of the adsorption amount of alkali-treated Kapok (around 12.6g/g), while the equilibrium adsorption amount was not sensitive to alkali concentration. The kinetics of human-like collagen followed both Quasi first and Quasi second order kinetic model, implying that the adsorption process where characterized by both physisorption and chemisorption. Finally, characterization of the AKF-2 coupled with the studies based on the inter-particle diffusion model showed a three-step of human-like collagen diffusion consisting of surface diffusion, inter-fiber diffusion and fiber' hollow cavity diffusion. Our results demonstrate a perfect high absorption performance of Kapok fiber providing a potential for application of collagen-base dressings.

Natural dyes exhibit a low dye uptake when cellulosic fiber dyeing is carried out using a conventional water bath dyeing process. In this research, cotton fabric was exhaust dyed in a microemulsion dyebath containing cacao husk extracts dye and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) to achieve higher dye exhaustion percentage on cotton fiber, which is an environmentally beneficial dyeing process. The adsorption behavior of cacao husk extract dye in a D5 microemulsion system was investigated under conditions of varied dye mass (1-8% o.w.f), dyeing time (5-500 min), and dyeing temperatures (333-373 K). Kinetic modelling of cacao husk extracts dye/D5 adsorption on cotton fiber was studied by fitting experimental data to pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order kinetics, and the intraparticle diffusion model. Early results indicated that the kinetic model of adsorption of cacao husk extracts dye on cotton fiber followed the pseudo second-order model. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm models were employed to analyze the adsorption isotherms, and the results showed that the adsorption process fit well with the Langmuir model compared to the Freundlich isotherm. The mean adsorption energy from the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model implied that adsorption of the cacao husk extracts onto cotton was accompanied with a physical process. The values of standard enthalpy (DH°[0), standard entropy (DS°[ 0), and Gibbs free energy (DG°\ 0) strongly reflected that the adsorption of the cacao husk extracts onto cotton was thermodynamically favourable and feasible. Thus, waterless dyeing of cotton fabric using a natural dye/D5 system explores a sustainable dyeing technology with higher dye exhaustion percentage.
