Abstract-We used new precise leveling data acquired 40 days after the Bam earthquake in combination with radar interferometry observations from both ascending and descending orbits to investigate static deformation associated with the 2003 Bam earthquake. We invert this geodetic data set to gain insight into the fault geometry and slip distribution of the rupture. The best-fitting dislocation model is a steeply east-dipping right-lateral strike-slip fault that has a size of 11 by 8 km and strikes N2°W. We find that such smooth geometry fits available geodetic data better than previously proposed models for this earthquake. Our distributed slip model indicates a maximum strike slip of 3 m occurring about 3 to 5 km deep. The slip magnitude and depth of faulting taper to the north, where the fault approaches the Bam city. Inclusion of crustal layering increases the amount of maximum slip inferred at depth by about 4%.

Abstract:The present study investigates the crustal strain in Turkey by using data from the Turkish permanent GNSS network (TPGN) and international GNSS services (IGS) observations for a period of 9 years, 2009 t0 2017. The positional variation of GNSS sites is studied to understand the coordinate reliability, interseismic and coseismic e ects and linear velocities as well as three dimensional principal strains across the country. The study of coordinate reliability shows that the horizontal and vertical residuals in 2013 and 2015 are of the order of 100 mm per coordinate or higher than those of 2009 and 2011 and 10 times higher than those of 2017. The changes in baseline length relative to an arbitrary zero-o set for the selected period shows that the most of the sites have displacement in the interval − to 10 mm but some sites have larger variations. These displacements are mostly related to motion of the Turkish tectonic plate, regional crustal deformation and small amounts of errors in GNSS positioning. The most GNSS site velocities located all over Turkey give signicant information for the study. The GNSS data shows that the Anatolian plate relative to the Eurasia is moving in a western direction in the central part of Turkey and starts to move in a south-westerly direction in the west part of the country. The westward motion of Anatolia increases gradually from 20 mm/yr in central Anatolia to 30 mm/yr in south-west Turkey. The numerical simulation of the crustal strain in the Aegean region shows a maximum 1.0446×10 − compressional principal strain rate while the second principal strain rate is zero. The strain in Central Anatolia is evidently dominated by extensional deformations and the principal strain rate reaches to 0.9589×10 − with maximum extension. The Marmara Region network is subject to an extensional principal strain (0.6608×10 − )which is also revealed in the Mediterranean Region with a 0.5682×10 − extension. The present analysis of GNSS data over the region may complement towards the understanding of the stability of regional tectonics and long term aseismic strain inside the country.

Abstract. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are space based positioning techniques and widely used in geodetic applications. Geodetic networking accomplished by engineering surveys constitutes one of these tasks. Geodetic networks are used as the base of all kinds of geodetic implementations, Co from the cadastral plans to the relevant surveying processes during the realization of engineering applications. Geodetic networks consist of control points positioned in a defined reference frame. In fact, such positional information could be useful for other studies as well. One of such fields is geodynamic studies that use the changes of positions of control stations within a network in a certain time period to understand the characteristics of tectonic movements. In Turkey, which is located in tectonically active zones and struck by major earthquakes quite frequently, the positional information obtained in engineering surveys could be very useful for earthquake related studies. For this purpose, a GPS (Global Positioning System) network of 650 stations distributed over Istanbul (Istanbul GPS Triangulation Network; abbreviated IGNA) covering the northern part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) was established in 1997 and measured in 1999. From 1998 to 2004, the IGNA network was extended to 1888 stations covering an area of about 6000 km 2 , the whole administration area of Istanbul. All 1888 stations within the IGNA network were remeasured in 2005. In these two campaigns there existed 452 common points, and between these two campaigns two major earthquakes took place, on 17 August and 12 November 1999 with a Richter scale magnitude of 7.4 and 7.2, respectively. Several studies conducted for estimating the horizontal and vertical displacements as a result of these earthquakes on NAFZ are discussed in this paper. In geodynamic projects carried out before the earthquakes in 1999, an annual average veCorrespondence to: M. T.Özlüdemir (tozlu@itu.edu.tr) locity of 2-2.5 cm for the stations along the NAFZ were estimated. Studies carried out using GPS observations in the same area after these earthquakes indicated that point displacements vary depending on their distance to the epicentres of the earthquakes. But the directions of point displacements are similar. The results obtained through the analysis of the IGNA network also show that there is a common trend in the directions of point displacements in the study area. In this paper, the past studies about the tectonics of Marmara region are summarised and the results of the displacement analysis on the IGNA network are discussed.
